when they're not hungry they scream

but when they're cold they cry

chicks are like little dogs

but sometimes the mother fetches them

to give her corn and wheat

the chicks are not given their food

they are not given shelter either

much less are they given shelter under their wings, huddled under their wings

the chicks live huddled together

but never sleep until the next day

chicks are the hens of the future.
