Balancing Physical and Spiritual Aspects.

We have the ongoing Navratri festival In India. The 9 day festival marks the worshipping of goddess Durga. People keep fasting and follow certain rituals to please the goddesses. Navratri is celebrated twice a year, the first one happens during the month of March-April which is known as Chaitra Navratri and second one happens in the months of September-October which is known as Sharad Navratri. While many see it as a religious significance but if we look deeper the timing of these festival aligns with seasonal transitions, specifically the equinoxes and solstices, which mark the beginning of spring and autumn.

We often worry about our health when season changes. The season change always invites many diseases and flu. But the timing of these festival during the season change makes it quite special. Navratri falls during periods of significant seasonal change, such as the onset of spring i.e Chaitra Navratri and autumn i.e Sharad Navratri. Chaitra Navratri occurs in March-April, coinciding with the spring equinox, when the days and nights are of equal length, marking the beginning of the spring season. The Sharad Navratri falls in September-October, during the autumnal equinox, when the days and nights are again of equal length, marking the beginning of autumn. The timing of Navratri also holds spiritual significance, with the festival celebrating the victory of good over evil and the power of the divine feminine, as well as honoring the nine avatars of Goddess Durga. According to Ayurveda, these transitional periods are considered times of potential imbalance in the body's doshas (energy systems), and Navratri rituals, including fasting and detoxification, are believed to help prepare the body for the upcoming seasonal changes.

During Navratri, devotees often fast to cleanse the body and purify the mind, abstaining from grains, non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and certain spices, while focusing on a sattvic diet of fruits, milk, and light vegetarian dishes. Fasting during Navratri, can lead to a clearer and more focused mind, making it easier to engage in meditation and other spiritual practices. Navratri fasting, when combined with yoga and meditation, can promote physical and mental well-being, aiding in detoxification, improved digestion, and enhanced focus. The worship of different forms of Goddess Durga symbolizes the victory of positive spiritual energy over negative earthly aspects, promoting a balanced approach to life.

This is what makes the festival an immense importance for many people in India. Those who understands the benefits get benefitted much in life. It is not about religion and practices but the various benefits associated with this festival.

In good faith - Peace!!
