After a week of research and a lot of audiovisual content consumption, I bring you a different kind of post that I hope you enjoy.

This month’s topic is sustainability, and without a doubt, it is a subject discussed time and again, with many angles and viewpoints. Because if there is something difficult for humans, it is keeping progress and environmental care balanced. It seems that everything that makes us advance in science and technology comes at an environmental cost, and that is where we must discern what should or shouldn’t be sacrificed.

El tema de este mes es la sostenibilidad y sin dudas es un tema que se discute una y otra vez, con muchas aristas y puntos de vista, porque si algo es difícil para el humano es llevar a la par progreso y cuidado ambiental. Tal parece que todo lo que nos hace progresar en la ciencia y la técnica viene arraigado a un costo ambiental, y es ahí donde tenemos que discernir entre qué debemos o no sacrificar.

Surely we have all seen Wall-E, a movie from 2008, and surely we all remember how it presents us with an extreme future, where the world was devastated by excessive consumption and a lack of responsibility on the part of humans. This is my first proposal to understand sustainability: watching that gem of animation. It is impossible not to reflect after 98 minutes of adventure and think about what kind of future we want to live in.

Seguro todos hemos visto Wall-E una película del 2008, y seguro todos recordamos cómo nos presenta un futuro extremo, donde el mundo fue devastado por el exceso de consumo y la falta de responsabilidad por parte de los humanos. Esta es mi primera propuesta para entender la sostenibilidad, ver esa joya de la animación. Anthropocentrism (Antropocentrismo)

Anthropocentrism can be defined as the philosophical current that places humans at the center of all things. And although we are important and must maximize our qualities as a species, the anthropocentric vision has had a very significant impact on our planet. By placing ourselves at the center of all decisions, we forget that we share the world with many other species, we overexploit forests and minerals, we displace or directly eliminate species, and we leave a huge footprint of pollution.

El antropocentrismo se puede definir como la corriente filosófica que pone al ser humano como el centro de todas las cosas. Y aunque somos importantes y debemos explotar al máximo nuestras cualidades como especie, la visión antropocéntrica ha tenido un impacto muy significativo en nuestro planeta, al ponernos en el centro de todas las decisiones olvidamos que compartimos mundo con muchas otras especies, sobreexplotamos los bosques y minerales, desplazamos o de plano eliminamos especies y dejamos una enorme huella de contaminación.

This ethical and philosophical aspect, I believe, is approached in a very enjoyable and even moving way in the 2009 movie Avatar, presenting us with a world where natural resources were exploited without any consideration for the planet and much less mediating implications and spiritual or ecological values.

Culture and art are another weapon to defend our planet and the environment, and these audiovisual works reaffirm that. It is sad to see campaigns against art that fail to create a real impact, only discrediting the need for a movement in favor of sustainable development. There are many ways to raise awareness and demand changes without resorting to vandalism, and art is one of them.

La cultura y el arte es un arma más para defender nuestro planeta y el medio ambiente, estas obras audiovisuales lo reafirman. Es triste ver campañas en contra del arte que no logran causar un impacto real, solo desprestigian la necesidad de un movimiento a favor del desarrollo sostenible. Existen muchas formas de generar conciencia y exigir cambios sin recurrir al vandalismo, el arte es una de ellas.
