The Fires of Heaven - The Wheel of Time #5 By Robert Jordan | Book Review

Greetings to all the bookworms in this great community! Today I want to review a series that I started reading a couple of years ago and had been meaning to finish. Today's book is the fifth in the series, and I'm sure I only reviewed the first book, “The Eye of the World,” because I didn't know how to approach reviewing the subsequent books.

El libro de hoy es el 5.º de la saga, y estoy segura de que solo hice la reseña del primer libro “El ojo del mundo”, porque no sabía como abordar las reseñas de los siguientes.

According to my Bookmory app records, it took me over a year to read this book. Every time I opened a page, I would lose focus and end up doing or reading something else. It wasn't that I was suffering from reader's block, it was simply that I was overwhelmed by the number of pages I had left to read, and there were a lot of them. And as always, that boredom and desire not to read a long book is in the brain and not in the ability. So last month I came up with a plan to finish it. I would read other books at the same time.

One of the reasons I forced myself to finish the book, besides seeing it listed as “Reading” in my apps, was Amazon's decision to cancel the series based on Brandon Sanderson's book, The Wheel of Time. This came as a shock to me because the series was what got me reading again after many years of reader's block. So, it was a disappointment for me. I realized that I would only learn more about the story of Rand al'Thor and all his companions if I finished reading the 14 thick books that make up this great saga written by Robert Jordan.

The strategy was to read whatever I wanted from any other book, and when I completed my daily reading percentage, I would read a chapter of The Fires of Heaven to feel like I was making progress. When I realized that I had read six books in a month, I realized that I could finish reading the aforementioned book.

Más de un año tardé en leer este libro según mis registros en la aplicación Bookmory. Cada vez que abría una página, me disociaba y terminaba haciendo o leyendo cualquier otra cosa. No era que me hacía caer en bloqueo lector, era simplemente que me abrumaba la cantidad de páginas que me quedaban por recorrer, y eran muchísimas. Y como siempre, ese aburrimiento y las ganas de no leerme un libro largo está en el cerebro y no en la capacidad. Así que el último mes urdí un plan para poder terminarlo. Leería otros libros en paralelo.

Una de las razones por las que me obligué a tener que terminarme el libro, además de verlo en “Leyendo” en mis aplicaciones, fue la decisión que tomó Amazon de cancelar la serie basada en el libro de Brandon Sanderson: La Rueda del Tiempo. Esto fue un choque para mí, porque la serie fue la causante de que volviera a leer después del bloqueo de lector que tuve por muchos años, así que para mí fue una decepción y me di cuenta de que solo sabría más de la historia de Rand al'Thor y de todos sus compañeros, si terminaba de leer los 14 libros gordos que conforman esta gran saga escrita por Robert Jordan.

La estrategia era leer lo que quisiera de cualquier otro libro, y cuando completara mi porcentaje de lectura diaria, leería un capítulo de Cielo en Llamas para sentir que estaba avanzando. Cuando me di cuenta de que había leído 6 libros en un mes fue cuando me di cuenta de que podía terminar de leerme el mencionado libro.

To summarize everything that happened after the events of The Eye of the World, we must bear in mind that Jordan takes “The Hero's Journey” and builds each character based on this literary device. Among other things, the journey is used and exploited to the point where all we see are roads, trips, and checking the map every three minutes to know where we are. Rand has come and gone. At first, I was frustrated because Rand didn't use his power, but by the end of the fourth book, he was already being recognized as a great man. It also bothered me a little that they didn't spend much time on him, but now in this fifth book, there is a lot about Rand.

Egwene is training as an Aes Sedai and also receiving lessons from the Aiel Wise Women as a great dreamwalker. Egwene and Elayne are doing secret work for Siuan Sanche, which consists of discovering the members of the Black Ajah. Mat now speaks the ancient language and is a strategist with memories of past millennia. Perrin is the great Lord of Two Rivers and is with Faile, although in the fifth book there is no chapter from his point of view. Moraine and Lan are with Egwene and Rand, providing support and training. All the friends are separated at this point. And in this book, they have already discovered the capabilities they have with their great powers, whether magical or strategic.

Honestly, I had never read such a fantastic development as in this saga. And although there is still a lot to read, the foundations of each character were already laid. Although I am quite eager to know and learn more about this world of high fantasy, I am aware that I am going to pause this saga for a while. I have other books I want to read, and I feel it's better to step away from everything that piques my curiosity and increase my reading habit even more. So, next year I won't have to worry about the number of books I have pending, but rather enjoy reading as I did in the past.

Para hacer un resumen de todo lo ocurrido después de los acontecimientos de El ojo del mundo. Tendremos que tener en cuenta de que Jordan toma “El viaje del héroe” y construye cada personaje tomando en cuenta este recurso literario. Entre estas cosas, el viaje es utilizado y explotado hasta el punto en el que lo que vemos son caminos, viajes y revisar el mapa cada tres para saber en donde estamos. Rand ha ido y venido, al principio me frustraba porque Rand no tocaba su poder, pero al término del 4.º libro ya estaba siendo reconocido como un grande, también me molestaba un poco que no pasaran mucho de él, pero ya en este 5.º, hay mucho de Rand.

Egwene está entrenándose como Aes Sedai y además recibiendo lecciones de las Sabías Aiel como una gran caminante de sueños. Egwene y Elayne, están haciendo un trabajo secreto para Siuan Sanche, que consiste en descubrir a las miembros del Ajah negro. Mat ahora habla la lengua antigua, y es un estratega con recuerdos de milenios pasados. Perrin es el gran Lord en Dos Ríos y está con Faile, aunque en el 5.º libro no hay ningún capítulo con su punto de vista. Moraine y Lan están con Egwene y Rand, prestando apoyo y entrenando. Todos los amigos están separados hasta este punto. Y en este libro, ya han descubierto las capacidades que tienen con sus grandes poderes, sean mágicos o estratégicos.

Sinceramente, no había leído, jamás, un desarrollo fantástico tan grande como el de esta saga. Y aunque falta mucho por leer, ya estaban sentadas las bases de cada personaje. Aunque estoy bastante ansiosa por saber y conocer más acerca de este mundo de alta fantasía, estoy consciente de que voy a pausar esta saga por un rato. Tengo libros que también quiero leer, y siento que es mejor salir de todo eso que me causa curiosidad y aumentar aún más mi hábito de lectura, para que en el próximo año no tenga que estar preocupada por la cantidad de libros pendientes que tengo, sino más bien en disfrutar de la lectura como lo hacía en el pasado.

These books are very heavy, and the pace of reading is very slow. The author goes into great detail about things that seem unnecessary, such as hair dye or the clothes they wear. There was a moment when I became desperate and said, “But why should I care that Nynaeve doesn't want to be part of the show?” Later on, those details that seem small, trivial, and insignificant become a compelling reason that can even change the fate of the plot. Only great authors can do this.

Something that caught my attention throughout everything I read was the female characters. I was amazed that even though written by a man, he was able to read the behavior and frustrations of women so well. I mention this because the theme of women as a gender is fundamental to the story. The Aes Sedai are the only ones who can channel; men must not and are hunted down and stripped of their power. Rand did not move without his circle of spearmaids, who were his protectors. Avhienda, who never left Rand's side, did not treat him like the great Dragon Reborn, but even, without any intention, kept him grounded. The rulers of Andor were Queens, and only the firstborn daughters could inherit the throne. And there are many other examples like this throughout the story. But there was a reason for all this, and it was well executed because Robert Jordan's editor and proofreader was none other than Harriet McDougal, his wife.

Nothing captivates me more than stories with strong women as protagonists, and I don't care much who writes them, as long as they write them well. I may read another book by the author this year, but I'm not counting on it, because I'm always changing my mind about reading. What is certain is that I will continue to share more reviews of more books with you soon. We'll keep reading each other.

Estos libros son muy pesados, el ritmo de lectura es muy lento. El autor detalla muchas cosas que parecieran innecesarias, como los tintes de cabello, o los atuendos que utilizan. Hubo un momento en el que llegué a desesperarme y decir: “pero a mí que me importa que Nynaeve no quiera formar parte del espectáculo”, y más adelante, esos detalles que parecen pequeños, nimios e insignificantes, más adelante son una razón de peso que puede, incluso, cambiar el destino de la trama. Esto lo hacen solo los grandes autores.

Algo que durante todo lo que he leído me llamó fuertemente la atención, fueron los personajes femeninos. Me asombraba que aún escritos pornla mano de un hombre, pudiera leer tan bien el comportamiento y las frustraciones de las mujeres. Hago mención de esto, porque el tema de las mujeres como género es fundamental en la historia. Las Aes Sedai son las única que pueden encauzar, los hombres no deben y son cazados y liberados del poder. Rand no se movía sin su círculo de doncellas lanceras, quienes eran sus protectoras. Avhienda, quien no se separaba de Rand, no lo trataba como el gran Dragón Renacido, sino que incluso, hacía, sin ninguna intención, que mantuviera los pies en la tierra. Las gobernantes de Andor eran Reinas, y solo heradaban las primogénitas mujeres. Y de esta forma, muchas otros ejemplos que ocurren a lo largo de esta historia. Pero todo esto tenía una razón, y estaba bien ejecutado porque la editora y correctora de Robert Jordan, no era más que Harriet McDougal, su esposa.

Nada me atrapa más que historias con mujeres fuertes protagonizando historias, y no me importa mucho quien las escriba, mientras las escriban bien. Tal vez me lea un libro más del autor este año, pero no me confío, porque siempre estoy cambiando de opinión con respecto a la lectura.
