Berrio Popular Bank Tower | Medellín

Greetings friends of Hive and the Architecture+Design community. It is common to pass by Colombia Avenue, that is my case and it is good because downtown Medellin has many buildings of different eras, functions and heights. This is a very big city, a metropolis in constant evolution with skyscrapers that give importance and beauty to the city. Among so many buildings from different eras I decided to show the Torre del Banco Popular Berrío which is in front of the Berrió Park. Researching I learned that this Banco Popular Tower in Medellin is a work of the last century, back in the 70's and 80's by Colombian architect German Samper Gnecco, what I do not know is the size of this building, but it looks very high, I estimate more than 100 meters. The truth is that I could not find that information, so one day I have to enter this skyscraper and see the floors marked by the elevator :)

Saludos amigos de Hive y de la comunidad Architecture+Design. Es común pasar por la avenida Colombia, ese es mi caso y es bueno porque el centro de Medellín tiene muchos edificios de distintas epocas, funciones y alturas. Esta es una ciudad muy grande, una metropolis en constante evolución con rascacielos que le dan importancia y belleza a la ciudad. Entre tantos edifcios de distintas epocas decidí mostrar la Torre del Banco Popular Berrío que está frente al Parque de Berrió. Investigando conocí que esta Torre del Banco Popular en Medellín es una obra del siglo pasado, por allá en la década de los años 70 y 80 acargo del arquitecto colombiano Germán Samper Gnecco, lo que no sé es el tamaño de este edificio, pero se ve que es muy alto, le calculo más de 100 metros. La verdad es que esa información no la pude encontrar, entonces un día tengo que entrar a este rascacielo y ver los pisos que marca el elevador :)

The Banco Popular Tower is elegant, I already said that it is on Colombia Avenue or 50th Street, there it is surrounded by other important buildings and constructions such as the Colpatria building, the Plaza de Berrio and other buildings that mark the beginning of a modern era with lots of reinforced concrete that changed the urban profile of Medellin to one with more tall buildings including this Banco Popular Tower with white stone veneers, glass planes and with its unique shape of great height that comes out in the background of the monument of the Plaza de Berrio.

Es elegante la Torre del Banco Popular, ya dije que está en la avenida Colombia o calle 50, allí está rodeada de otros edificios y construcciones importantes por ejemplo el edificio Colpatria, la Plaza de Berrio y otros edificios que marcan el inicio de una etapa moderna con mucho concreto armado que cambió el perfil urbano de Medellín a uno con más edificios altos entre ellos esta Torre del Banco Popular con enchapes en piedras blancas, planos en vidrio y con su forma singular de gran altura que sobre sale al fondo del monumento de la Plaza de Berrío.

I really like this reinforced concrete building with its white stone veneers in the middle of a totally urban and modern landscape. It is a strong building, so much so that I have some photos of the sides that look like they were taken from a fortress, so I have no doubt about the time dedicated to the planning of this architectural work; the architect Germán Samper together with the team of engineers achieved a durable and beautiful work. The tower has its base in a very cormecial area and as you can see it is surrounded by street vendors because it is a very busy and congested area, typical in the center of Medellin. Another typical detail of the city is the presence of works of art, such as the sculpture outside the Torre del Banco Popular Berrío.

Este edificio de concreto armado me gusta mucho con sus enchapes de piedras blancas en medio de un paisaje totalmente urbano y moderno. Es un edificio fuerte, tanto que tengo unas fotos de los laterales que parecen tomadas de una fortaleza, por eso no tengo duda del tiempo dedicado para la planeación de esta obra arquitectonica; el arquitecto Germán Samper junto el equipo de ingenieros lograron una obra durarera y hermosa. La torre tiene su base en una zona muy cormecial y como pueden ver está rodeada de vendedores ambulantes porque es una zona muy transitada y congestionada, típico en el centro de Medellín. Otro detalle típico de la ciudad es la presencia de obras de artes, como la escultura afuera de la Torre del Banco Popular Berrío.

It is inevitable for me not to raise my eyes every time I pass by here, is that in addition to the tower among other imposing buildings there is a statue that stands on a concrete column artistically carved that raises the statue called, El desafio de la raza, a monument donated in 1980 by the Banco Popular to the city of Medellin as the inscription on the plaque says and that was the year when the building was ready.

Es inevitable para mi no alzar la mirada cada vez que paso por aquí, es que además de la torre entre otros edificios imponentes ahí está una estatuta que se alza sobre una columna de concreto artisticamente labrada que eleva la estatua llamada, El desafio de la raza, monumento donado en 1980 por el Banco Popular a la ciudad de Medellín como dice la inscripción en la placa y ese fue el año cuando estuvo listo el edifico.

Another monument nearby is La Esfera Pública, a modern art sculpture that captures my curiosity because it looks like something spacey, something that fell from the sky but researching I found out that it actually represents our planet, so I think that as humans we should observe that sculpture and meditate on our actions on earth. I also found out that it is a new sculpture, just 10 years old, created by Fredy Alzate in the middle of a public space diagonal to the Berrío Popular Bank Tower.

Otro monumento allí cerca es La Esfera Pública, una escultura de arte moderno que capta mi curiosidad porque parece algo espacial, algo que cayó del cielo pero investigando conocí que en realidad representa nuestro planeta, entonces creo que como humanos debemos observar esa escultura y meditar en nuestras acciones sobre la tierra. También averigué que es una escultura nueva, de apenas 10 años creada por Fredy Alzate en medio de un espacio público diagonal a la Torre del Banco Popular Berrío.
