The easy way:
Wallet: Verus Mobile app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.autonomoussoftwarefoundation.verusmobile.android)
Mining: VerusMiner (https://pangz-lab.github.io/verusminer/)
The miner app give a decent hashrate, but I have personally installed UserLand and set it to mine that way around. A bit more technical though

But I'll be using some time today to see if there's a better alternative.

thanks for the follow up. No I did not. To be honest I almost never use my android phone. will fire it up soon though.
