Y ahora son tres - Relato Risingstar [ESP-ENG]

En mi último viaje a Escocia conocí a Edmond. Para aquel entonces, Danny y yo habíamos acordado añadir a alguien nuevo a la banda. No teníamos planes de buscarlo en ese país, pero por casualidad del destino, nos los topamos sin querer. En algún lugar de esa tierra fría y tranquila, estaba Edmond, tocando para clientes ancianos en un bar que casi nadie visitaba. Danny reconoció su talento con solo escucharlo, quizás por las cervezas en sus torrentes sanguíneos.

"Scott, este es el tío que buscamos". Me dijo con una palmada en la espalda.

Al principio pensé que se trataba de una de sus bromas, o que estaba muy ebrio. Pero cuando lo vi levantarse de la mesa para ir a conversar con un Edmond que ya se iba, supuse que hablaba en serio. Lo dejé tranquilo, pensando que olvidaría el asunto después de la borrachera. No obstante, después que abandonamos el bar, me comentó que Edmond había aceptado una conversación de negocios, y que yo, por ser el más adinerado, debía pagar todos los gastos del nuevo integrante de la banda.

On my last trip to Scotland I met Edmond. By that time, Danny and I had agreed to add someone new to the band. We had no plans to seek him out in that country, but as fate would have it, we inadvertently bumped into them. Somewhere in that cold, quiet land, there was Edmond, playing for elderly patrons in a bar that hardly anyone visited. Danny recognized his talent just by listening to him, perhaps because of the beers in his bloodstreams.

“Scott, this is the guy we're looking for.” He said with a pat on the back.

At first I thought it was one of his jokes, or that he was really drunk. But when I saw him get up from the table to go talk to a departing Edmond, I assumed he was serious. I left him alone, thinking he would forget the whole thing after the drunkenness. However, after we left the bar, he told me that Edmond had agreed to a business conversation, and that I, being the wealthy one, should pay all the expenses of the new member of the band.

La reunión se llevó a cabo pese a mis renuencias. Según Danny, el que incluyéramos a Edmond en la banda significaba todo un hito para la música norteamericana, pues él aseguraba que allá, en la tierra que nos vio nace, nadie estaba acostumbrado a un estilo de música europeo y escandinavo. Más allá de que yo debía de costear nuestros vagos sueños de músicos, y de que sentía que se aprovechaba de eso para convencerme de sus ideas estrafalarias, tenía yo el miedo de que Edmond pudiese terminar de condenar nuestras carreras, no por su talento, sino por su estilo.

Esa noche, cuando llegamos al restaurante, nos encontramos a Edmond en la mesa que habíamos reservado el día anterior. Ya había tenido la modestia de pedir comida, vino, postre y cargar todo a mi cuenta. Danny se apresuró a decirle que ya era un hecho que estaba en la banda, a lo que yo añadí:

"... No sin antes responder unas cuantas preguntas."

The reunion took place in spite of my reluctance. According to Danny, the fact that we included Edmond in the band meant a milestone for American music, since he assured that there, in the land where we were born, nobody was accustomed to a European and Scandinavian style of music. Beyond the fact that I had to pay for our vague dreams as musicians, and that I felt he was taking advantage of this to convince me of his outlandish ideas, I was afraid that Edmond could end up condemning our careers, not because of his talent, but because of his style.

That evening, when we arrived at the restaurant, we found Edmond at the table we had reserved the day before. He had already had the modesty to order food, wine, dessert and charge everything to my bill. Danny was quick to tell him that it was already a done deal that I was in the band, to which I added:

“... Not without answering a few questions first.”

Le pregunté muchas cosas, tanto de su vida como de su tiempo tocando el piano. Edmond respondió a todas mis interrogantes, a pesar de que Danny me veía como si fuese yo un aguafiestas. No quería yo perder mi dinero en malas inversiones, así que le pedí que, antes de darle un sí como respuesta, nos debía convencer un poco más. Él se ofreció a tocar junto a nosotros en el mismo bar donde nos conocimos, así que aceptamos para cerrar el acuerdo. Danny se enojó por mi negatividad, asociándome con las personas que se niegan a lo bueno. Yo solo le dije:

"Así son los negocios; no se debe lazar uno de buenas a primeras."

La noche de la presentación, Danny y yo hicimos un dueto mientras Edmond tocaba el piano. A pesar de que los espectadores eran solo ancianos, logramos hacernos notar con esas viejas músicas de George Benson. Aunque aún tenía yo mis dudas, terminé por aceptar la anexión de Edmond a nuestra banda. Le pagué todos los viáticos, visa y demás... aunque Danny parecía estar más feliz que el propio Edmond.

I asked him many questions, both about his life and his time playing the piano. Edmond answered all my questions, even though Danny looked at me like I was a spoilsport. I didn't want to waste my money on bad investments, so I asked him to convince us some more before giving him a yes as an answer. He offered to play with us in the same bar where we met, so we accepted to close the deal. Danny got angry for my negativity, associating me with people who refuse good things. I just told him:

“That's the way business is; you don't just jump in right off the bat.”

The night of the presentation, Danny and I performed a duet while Edmond played the piano. Even though the audience was just old people, we managed to get noticed with those old George Benson tunes. Although I still had my doubts, I eventually agreed to Edmond's joining our band. I paid all the per diems, visa and so on... although Danny seemed to be happier than Edmond himself.

Y la verdad Danny había tenido la razón con Edmond. Cuando regresamos a Norteamérica, e iniciamos nuestros pasos musicales, la banda recibió una buena acogida en los bares donde se presentaba. Fue un camino directo a la cima, aunque de una manera agria y dulce. Digo esto, porque meses después de que hiciéramos nuestro primer contrato con una disquera, me enteré de que Danny y Edmond se conocían desde que eran niños, y que ambos habían confabulado para engañarme. De allí la insistencia de Danny para ir a Escocia, y su peculiar insistencia para que Edmond fuera parte de la banda.

Cuando lo confronté, Danny me respondió con la misma frase que una vez le dije:

"Así son los negocios..." añadiendo: "no todos los engaños son malos".

And the truth was that Danny had been right with Edmond. When we returned to North America, and started our musical steps, the band received a good reception in the bars where it performed. It was a straight shot to the top, albeit in a sour and sweet way. I say this, because months after we made our first record deal, I found out that Danny and Edmond had known each other since they were kids, and that the two of them had conspired to cheat me. Hence Danny's insistence that we go to Scotland, and his peculiar insistence that Edmond be part of the band.

When I confronted him, Danny responded with the same phrase I had once told him:

“That's the way business is...” adding, ”not all cheating is bad.”
