Chise sees them everywhere: they're horrifying, mysterious, ghostly creatures... only she can perceive them, and it has caused her to be scorned by the world. Refusing to be a normal child and dominated by the deepest fears, Chise decides to ignore her own existence, becoming an outcast that no one can stand, no one wants, and everyone wants to get rid of.

One day, while running from the monsters only she can see, she stumbles upon an unusual place: a majestic library where the stars can shine even in the daytime. There she meets Riichi, the first person who doesn't look at her like a freak, and who can also see the ghostly creatures. The two will share a friendship that transcends the limits of the natural, although along the way, tragedy and the past will end up being their worst enemies.

Sometimes, lost souls don't get a second chance, but they decide to give one to those who still have hope.

Magic can appear in unimaginable, sometimes devastating, forms. That's Chise's life, or was, and I say "was" because this OVA takes us to a very different past from what the protagonist lives in the present, alongside her professor and magic mentor, and also with her talking dog who can transform into a human.

Hoshi Matsu Hito is nothing more than a prequel to the main events of The Ancient Magus' Bride. You don't need to watch the anime, but after you see the OVA, maybe you'll do as I did and decide to continue with the rest of the story. Because, well, Chise's arc—tragic to an extreme—is appealing from the start. She'll be in charge of narrating it... although I have to admit it's quite bittersweet.

This OVA has three episodes of about 24 minutes each. Chise will take us into her past while sitting on the knees of Professor Elias, a guy with a skull for a head. Don't ask me if this looks strange... in anime, nothing is strange enough (😅).

And, as I was saying, Chise's past isn't the prettiest, but what's curious and appealing (if you still haven't watched The Ancient Magus' Bride) is the reason behind the magic, the culture between the magical and the real, and the protagonist's own powers. It seems that the world converges between the physical and spiritual dimensions, and that there are also many creatures, both benign and malevolent. However, the focus of the story goes in another direction, revealing the harsh adversity in love and with soulmates, who are tied to a promise that survives the passage of time.

The animation is beautiful and envelops you in a dramatic and melancholic atmosphere. The interesting thing here is that you feel a lot of compassion for the characters; Chise and Riichi are the main focus, tied to the beauty of the stars and books. There's a more bitter secret between the lines. The OVA only gives you superficial clues; you have to connect the remaining dots.

The final reflection will play a lot with your feelings and your way of understanding promises, indecision, and souls that remember even after they die.

A book can save you...

The most beautiful magic is that which comes from the heart. Hoshi Matsu Hito ends up being a charming OVA, but it leaves you wanting to know a lot more, especially because the story goes into the past without exploring much of the present, except for some very precise details. As I said before, this is what can inspire you to watch the anime and discover the why and how of a Chise who is more stable emotionally and mentally.

Some stars are condemned to live surrounded by darkness, but why, even when surrounded by darkness, can't we turn our gaze toward the bits of light? Not everything has to be bad, not all is lost. As long as there is a little hope, we all have the possibility of achieving happiness, even if there are no apparent reasons to be happy.

Chise los ve en todas partes; son criaturas horripilantes, misteriosas, fantasmales... solo ella puede percibirlas, y eso la ha llevado a sufrir el desprecio del mundo. Negada a ser una niña normal, y dominada por los miedos más profundos, Chise decide ignorar el propio hecho de su existencia, conviertiéndose en una renegada que nadie soporta, que nadie quiere, y de la que todos quieren deshacerse.

Un día, mientras huye de los monstruos que solo ella puede ver, se topa con un sitio inusual: una biblioteca majestuosa en la que las estrellas pueden brillar incluso de día. Allí conoce a Riichi, la primera persona que no la mira como un fenómeno, y que además, que también puede ver a las criaturas fantasmales. Ambos compartirán una amistad que sobrepasa el límite de lo natural, aunque en el camino, la tragedia y el pasado terminarán siendo sus peores enemigos.

A veces, las almas perdidas no tienen una segunda oportunidad, pero deciden dárselas a quienes todavía tienen esperanza.

La magia puede presentarse de formas inimaginables, a veces, en formas devastadoras. Así es la vida de Chise, o era, y digo que "era" porque esta Ova nos lleva a un pasado muy diferente a lo que vive la protagonista en el presente, junto a su profesor y mentor de magia, y también junto a su perro parlanchín que además puede transformarse en humano.

Y es que Hoshi Matsu Hito no es más que una precuela a los eventos principales de Mahō Tsukai no Yome. No hace faltar ver el anime, pero luego de que veas la Ova, tal vez hagas como yo y tomes la decisión de continuar con el resto de la historia. Porque vale, el arco de Chise, trágico por demasía, es atractivo desde el principio. Ella se encargará de relatarlo... aunque he de admitir que es bastante agridulce.

Esta Ova cuenta con tres episodios de unos 24 minutos aproximadamente. Chise se encargará de llevarnos a su pasado sobre las rodillas del profesor Elias, un tipo con cabeza cadavérica. No me preguntes si esto se ve extraño... en el anime no hay nada suficientemente extraño (😅).

Y bueno, como te decía, el pasado de Chise no es el más bonito, pero lo curioso y atractivo (si todavía no ves Mahō Tsukai no Yome) es el porqué de la magia, la cultura entre lo mágico y lo real, y los propios poderes de la protagonista. Parece ser que el mundo converge entre la dimensión física y la espiritual, y que, además, hay muchas criaturas tanto benignas como malignas. Sin embargo, el foco de la historia va en otro sentido, y nos devela la cruda adversidad en los amores y las almas gemelas, atadas a una promesa que sobrevive al pasar del tiempo.

La animación es hermosa y te envuelve en una atmósfera dramática y melancólica. Lo interesante aquí es que sientes mucha compasión por los personajes; Chise y Riichi son el foco principal, atados a la belleza de las estrellas y los libros. Hay un secreto más amargo entrelíneas. La Ova solo te da pistas superficiales, tú debes atar los cabos restantes.

La reflexión final jugará mucho con tus sentimientos, y tu forma de entender las promesas, la indecisión, y las almas que recuerdan aún después de morir.

Un libro puede salvarte...

La magia más bonita es aquella que surge del corazón. Hoshi Matsu Hito termina siendo una Ova encantadora, pero que te deja con ganas de saber mucho más, sobre todo, porque la historia va al pasado sin explorar mucho el presente, salvo a algunos detalles muy precisos. Como te dije antes, esto es lo que puede inspirarte a ver el anime, y descubrir el porqué y el cómo de una Chise más estable en el plano anímico y sentimental.

Algunas estrellas están condenadas a vivir rodeadas de oscuridad, pero, ¿por qué aún rodeados de oscuridad, no podemos dirigir nuestra mirada hacia los pedacitos de luz? No todo tiene por qué ser malo, no todo está perdido. Mientras haya un poco de esperanza, todos tenemos la posibilidad de alcanzar la felicidad, aunque no haya aparentes razones para ser felices.
