Maturín Sports Complex: A Place to Escape the City's Harsh Hustle and Bustle.

My second August destination led me to a popular recreational area in the city of Maturín, Venezuela. These days have been very hot, and therefore, a cool breeze, which only places with many trees can provide, is much needed. It's hard to find this in a concrete jungle, but I thank God that there are still corners where one can breathe without feeling suffocated.

The Polideportivo (Sports Complex) is a large area of sports courts where people usually go either to play or to be entertained by watching the games. It's quite a spacious area, although the most popular section is dedicated to beach volleyball. People usually go in the afternoon, when the sun is at its lowest point. It's difficult to play volleyball in such scorching heat as that of this city, especially right after midday.

The place has been modernized a lot, to the point of having an exclusive area for shops and and restaurants. This is one of the most popular areas of the city.

Even though the morning was still very young, the heat could already be felt to the bone. I walked around the surroundings, looking for a spot to better enjoy the cool breeze blowing in the shade of the trees. Before that, I made a few small stops.

There's a small boulevard that connects all the sports facilities. It's quite pleasant to walk and observe the surroundings, which are very clean. It was nine in the morning, so most of the areas were deserted. I like it when there isn't much crowding because I can enjoy my walks better, and stress doesn't rise as much.

This city is bipolar when it comes to the climate. So, it's common for it to suddenly rain, even if it's still very hot. Luckily, although dark clouds appeared, the rain didn't actually fall.

My first stop was the "sand complex." As I mentioned before, this is the most visited area, especially because people usually play beach volleyball and soccer here. The place was empty; the heat drives away even the most enthusiastic players.

I like beach volleyball, but I'm sorry, the scorching sun didn't want anyone to play, so I wasn't an exception either. By the way, there was no need to touch the sand to understand that it was surely hot. People usually play barefoot... yes, nobody likes their feet to get burned.

On the far left are the stands, which are made of concrete and have artificial turf. Many people come just to watch others play, perhaps to distract themselves a little.

From that point, you can see much of the city, including another of its major attractions: Maturín Cathedral.

There is a covered court nearby, where you can get a much better view of the entire sports complex. At some point during my tour, the rain, which had been absent, appeared, so I had to take shelter there. By the way, security is very good. It is common to see police officers patrolling, especially in the morning, when the place is usually quieter.

A few meters from the sand area, there's the paddle tennis court. I know, everything was so deserted that it tempted me to take advantage of the situation and play without pressure, but the heat was still there, and I also didn't have the appropriate sports attire. I preferred just to watch and breathe peacefully.

I think to use the paddle tennis court you have to pay, I don't know if it's to rent the place or the equipment. Beyond that, I love how it looks. And it's strategically located among the trees, so it's common for the breeze to blow a bit more from time to time.

I counted two coffee shops nearby, but they were closed :-(.

When the rain stopped, I continued my journey.

It was quite cloudy, but the heat lingered on and on. My next stop was "G. Francisco de Miranda" square, which is filled with trees. I love trees! The place was also deserted; apparently, people tend to fear the heat more than I do.

This square is one of the most beautiful in the city, especially because it's located in one of the most frequented areas.

A little further on, I came across this strange monument. I don't know what it means, but I associate it with the intense oil activity in the region.

At the opposite end, there are these volumetric letters, which form the name of the state to which this city belongs.

I took advantage of my time in the park to sit for a while and rest my feet, which were already a bit tired. The breeze was cooler, perhaps because there were more trees in the spot where I decided to settle.

Pigeons were more abundant than people. I counted several, and perhaps they wanted me to give them corn. Neither of us knew what the other truly wanted.

My Final Appreciation

The Polideportivo of Maturín is a place where sport, recreation, culture, and history converge to adorn visitors and immerse them iI'm not surence far removed from the constant stress of a city that never rests. This is usually one of my favorite places, especially when I'm trying to clear my mind from the urban hustle and bustle.

Here, you can practice sports, attend sporting events, or simply relax in your own way. The busiest hours are usually at sunset, but if you're like me and prefer places a bit more solitary, then the mornings will be perfect for you.

Tourist Aspects

Mi segundo destino de agosto me llevó a una popular zona de recreación de la ciudad de Maturín, Venezuela. Estos días han sido muy calurosos y, por lo tanto, es necesario algo de brisa fresca que solo los lugares con muchos árboles pueden otorgar. Es difícil hallarlo en una jungla de hormigón, pero doy gracias a Dios de que existan rincones en los que todavía se pueda respirar sin sentirse sofocado.

El Polideportivo es una zona amplia de canchas deportivas en las que las personas suelen ir o para jugar, o para distraerse mirando los juegos. Es un área bastante amplia, aunque la zona más popular se encuentra en la destinada al voleibol de playa. Las personas usualmente van durante la tarde, cuando el sol está en su punto más bajo. Es difícil practicar voleibol con un calor tan achicharrante como el de esta ciudad, sobre todo justo después del mediodía.

El lugar se ha modernizado mucho, al punto de contar con un área exclusiva para tiendas y restaurantes. Esta es una de las zonas más populares de la ciudad.

A pesar de que la mañana todavía era muy reciente, ya el calor podía percibirse en los huesos. Caminé por los alrededores, buscando un sitio para disfrutar mejor de la brisa fresca que sopla en la sombra de los árboles. Antes, hice unas pequeñas paradas.

Hay un pequeño bulevar que conecta todas las instalaciones deportivas. Es bastante agradable caminar y mirar los alrededores, que están muy limpios. Eran las nueve de la mañana, por lo que gran parte de las áreas estaban solitarias. Me gusta cuando no hay mucha aglomeración porque puedo disfrutar mejor mis recorridos, y el estrés no se eleva tanto.

Esta ciudad es bipolar en cuento al clima. Así que es habitual que llueva de pronto, aunque siga haciendo mucho calor. Por suerte, aunque las nubes negras se asomaron, la lluvia no terminó de aparecer.

Mi primera parada fue el "complejo de arena". Como te decía antes, esta es la zona más visitada, sobre todo porque las personas suelen jugar voleibol y soccer de playa. El lugar estaba vacío; el calor ahuyenta incluso a los jugadores más entusiastas.

Me gusta el voleibol de playa, pero lo siento, el sol achicharrante no quería que nadie jugara, así que yo tampoco fui la excepción. Por cierto, no hacía falta tocar la arena para entender que, seguramente, estaba caliente. Las personas suelen jugar descalzas... sí, a nadie le gusta que sus pies se quemen.

Al extremo izquierdo están las gradas, las cuales son de hormigón y tienen césped artificial. Muchas personas vienen solo a ver como otras juegan, tal vez para distraerse un poco.

Desde ese punto se puede ver gran parte de la ciudad, incluyendo otro de sus grandes atractivos: La catedral de Maturín.

Hay una cancha techada cerca, en la que se puede tener una vista mucho mejor de todo el complejo deportivo. En algún momento de mi recorrido la lluvia, antes ausente, apareció, así que tuve que refugiarme allí. Por cierto, la seguridad es muy buena. Es habitual mirar a policías patrullando, sobre todo durante la mañana, que el lugar suele estar más solo.

A unos cuantos metros de la zona de arena, está la cancha de pádel. Lo sé, todo estaba tan solitario que me provocaba aprovechar la situación para jugar sin presiones, pero el calor seguía allí, y tampoco tenía el ropaje deportivo adecuado. Preferí solo ver y respirar con tranquilidad.

Creo que para usar la cancha de pádel hay que pagar, no sé si para alquilar el sitio o el equipamiento. Más allá de eso, me encanta cómo se ve. Y está estratégicamente ubicada entre los árboles, por lo que es habitual que la brisa sople un poco más de vez en cuando.

Cuando la lluvia cesó continué mi recorrido.

Estaba bastante nublado, pero el calor seguía y seguía. Mi próxima parada fue la plaza "G. Francisco de Miranda", la cual está repleta de árboles. ¡Me encantan los árboles! El lugar también estaba solitario, al parecer, las personas suelen temerle más al calor que yo.

Esta plaza es una de las más bonitas de la ciudad, sobre todo porque se encuentra en una de las zonas más frecuentadas.

Un poco más adelante, me topé con este extraño monumento. No sé qué significa, pero lo asocio a la intensa actividad petrolera de la región

Mi apreciación final

El Polideportivo de Maturín es un lugar en el que el deporte, la recreación, la cultura y la historia se unen para engalanar a los visitantes y sumergirlos en algo ajeno al estrés constante de una ciudad que nunca descansa. Este suele ser uno de mis lugares más favoritos, sobre todo cuando intento despejar la mente del ajetreo urbano.

En este lugar puedes practicar deporte, asistir a eventos deportivos, o simplemente recrearte a tu propia manera. Las horas más concurridas suelen ser al atardecer, aunque si eres como yo, y prefieres que los lugares un poco más solitarios, entonces las mañanas serán perfectas para tí.
