One afternoon recently, I took a walk. I made it to the banks of the Dhepa River close to Mutuni Bazar, Dinajpur. There, I saw the Vati plant (Clerodendrum infortunatum). That’s when I collected these photographs. This plant is quite useful in so many ways.

Information about Vati plant :

Vati plant very common in Bangladesh Scientific name: Clerodendrum infortunatum. It mostly grows along riverbanks, in bushes and in open village fields. Makes a large shrub that can reach 2-3 metres tall. The leaves are thick and tough. The white flowers are the most beautiful things of this plant. In the center, of this flowers are light pink or reddish. Fruits later develop from the flowers. The fruits start out green, but eventually turn dark blue or sometimes black.

Not only is the Vati plant beautiful, but it is also packed with medicinal advantages. In folk medicine, people use its leaves and roots to cure fever, colds and coughs. Its leaf extract is used to treat body ache or arthritis, as it is a natural pain reliever. If anyone has allergy or itching, crushed leaves can be applied to skin for relief. Some village doctors also say its leaves aid in problems of digestion.

This plant not only serves a purpose in medicine but also for Nature. It prevents soil from being washed away, especially in areas with loose soil. This plant provides food and cover for many small birds and insects. These plants ensure the safety of nature and balance in the environment by growing along the road in villages.
