Walking through the remains of an Inca city in the Pumapungo Archaeological Park, Cuenca - The Ecuador diary / Caminando por los restos de una ciudad Inca en el Parque Arqueológico Pumapungo, Cuenca - El diario de Ecuador

The last stroll of my first day in Cuenca was to the Pumapungo Archaeological Park, where you can see the remains of Tomebamba, a city of the Inca Empire. It's not far from the historic center, and since I had my city map, I walked along the indicated streets until I arrived.

El último paseo de mi primer día en Cuenca fue al Parque Arqueológico Pumapungo, donde se pueden ver restos de Tomebamba, una ciudad del imperio inca. No está lejos del centro histórico, y como tenía mi mapa de la ciudad, caminé por las calles indicadas hasta llegar.

Of course, I stopped at several places to look around and take pictures. There were attractive murals on the walls and also historical structures, like this bridge you'll see below.

Por supuesto, me detuve en varios lugares para observar y tomar fotos. Había atractivos murales en las paredes y también estructuras históricas, como este puente que verán a continuación.

It's called "The Broken Bridge", the oldest bridge in Cuenca and one of its most iconic landmarks. According to a tourist brochure, "it was built between 1840 and 1850 to connect the historic center with the lower part of the city". As you can see in the following photo, it's incomplete, and is because in 1950, the river rose too high and washed away almost half of its structure. A few years later, in 1961, it was rebuilt and has been known as The Broken Bridge ever since.

Es “El Puente Roto”, el más antiguo de Cuenca y una de sus postales más emblemáticas. Según la información que leí en un folleto turístico, “fue construido entre los años 1840-1850 para comunicar el casco histórico con la parte baja de la ciudad”. Como pueden ver en la foto que sigue, está incompleto, y es que en 1950 el río creció demasiado y se llevó casi la mitad de su estructura. Unos años después, en 1961, fue reconstruido y desde entonces se le conoce como El Puente Roto.

A few minutes later I arrived at the park, and I was very excited because it was the first time I had visited a place related to the Incas, one of the most important pre-Hispanic civilizations.

Unos minutos después llegué al parque, y estaba muy emocionada porque era la primera vez que visitaba un lugar relacionado con los incas, una de las más importantes civilizaciones prehispánicas.

At the Pumapungo Archaeological Park, I toured the ruins of the ancient city of Tomebamba, and in the museum there, I saw the exhibits showcasing the history and worldview of the indigenous peoples of Ecuador. Entrance to the entire complex was free.

En el Parque Arqueológico Pumapungo hice el recorrido por las ruinas de la antigua ciudad de Tomebamba, y también, en el museo que hay allí, vi las exposiciones que muestran la historia y cosmovisión de los pueblos indígenas de todo Ecuador. La entrada a todo este complejo era gratis.

I didn't take any photos inside the museum because the lighting was dim and they didn't turn out well, they came out blurry... So I focused on photographing what I saw outside. Besides the ruins, this place also has an ethnobotanical garden and a bird rescue center.

No tomé fotos en las salas del museo porque la iluminación era tenue y no quedaban bien, salían como borrosas... Así que me enfoqué en fotografiar lo que vi en los exteriores. Aparte de las ruinas, este lugar tiene también un parque etnobotánico y un centro de rescate de avifauna.

As you begin your ascent to see the ancient city, with its remnants of the Cañari and Inca civilizations, you also enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of modern-day Cuenca. The afternoon was cloudy, but even so, the landscape looked very beautiful.

Cuando empiezas a subir para ver la antigua ciudad, con restos de los pueblos Cañari e Inca, también disfrutas de una bella vista panorámica de la Cuenca actual. La tarde estaba nublada, pero aún así el paisaje se veía muy bonito.

What impressed me most were undoubtedly the agricultural terraces, they look spectacular from both above and below. There are also water channels and some reconstructions of sites from the ancient city, such as the Aqlla Wasi. Sun worship was practiced there, and remains of human sacrifices have been found.

Sin duda lo que más me impactó fueron las terrazas agrícolas, se ven espectaculares tanto desde arriba como desde abajo. Hay también canales de agua y algunas reconstrucciones de sitios de la antigua ciudad como el Aqlla Wasi. Allí se le rendía culto al sol y se han encontrado restos de sacrificios humanos.

Of course, llamas, these beautiful animals native to the Andean highlands, are also present. They are part of the rescue center. Birds and other animals rescued from trafficking and other situations are cared for here, and if possible, later returned to their natural habitats.

No podían faltar aquí las llamas, estos lindos animales nativos de estas tierras andinas. Son parte del centro de rescate. Aves y otros animales provenientes del tráfico y otras situaciones, son atendidos acá, y si es posible, luego los devuelven a sus hábitats.

When I came down from the terraces, I went to the ethnobotanical park. There are more than 200 native species from the Andes. Of course, this attracts birds, it's like an oasis in the city for them, which is why you can see such a great variety here.

Cuando bajé de las terrazas me acerqué al parque etnobotánico. Allí hay más de 200 especies autóctonas de los Andes. Por supuesto esto atrae a las aves, es como un oasis en la ciudad para ellas, por eso se puede ver una gran variedad aquí.

In this scenario, one can imagine a little what life was like for those first inhabitants, then during the Inca empire, and the impact they must have suffered when Spanish colonization arrived.

En este escenario uno puede imaginarse un poco cómo sería la vida de aquellos primeros habitantes, luego durante el imperio inca, y el impacto que habrán sufrido cuando llegó la colonización española.

The ruins of this ancient Inca city are the only ones that survived in what is now the center of Cuenca, and around them the Spanish built much of what we see today. How many things must have been buried beneath all those buildings...

Las ruinas de esta antigua ciudad inca son las únicas que se salvaron en lo que hoy es el centro de Cuenca, y a su alrededor los españoles fueron construyendo gran parte de lo que vemos hoy. Cuántas cosas no habrán quedado enterradas debajo de todas esas edificaciones...
