Visiting a “Forbidden” cultural center and the Museum of Modern Art in Cuenca - The Ecuador diary / Visitando un centro cultural “Prohibido” y el Museo de Arte Moderno en Cuenca - El diario de Ecuador

Visiting a museum, or several, is one of the things I always do when I travel. I always enjoy learning through these places, whether it's about the history of the town or city I'm visiting, art, science, and so on.

Ir a un museo o varios, es una de las cosas que siempre hago cuando estoy de viaje. Siempre me gusta conocer a través de estos lugares, ya sea la historia del pueblo o ciudad que estoy visitando, el arte, la ciencia, etc.

After strolling through the historic center of Cuenca during the morning of my arrival in this city in southern Ecuador, in the afternoon I continued my journey towards a place that I had seen reviewed in my travel guide and that had caught my attention: Forbidden Cultural Center.

Después de pasear por el centro histórico de Cuenca durante la mañana de mi llegada a esta ciudad del sur de Ecuador, en la tarde seguí mi recorrido hacia un lugar que había visto reseñado en mi guía de viaje y que me había llamado la atención: Prohibido Centro Cultural.

This art space is located on the pedestrian street La Condamine, in El Vado neighborhood, a very beautiful and touristy area. Because it's situated on a slightly elevated point, it offers a panoramic view of the city.

Este espacio para el arte está ubicado en la calle peatonal La Condamine, del barrio El Vado, una zona muy bonita y turística. Como está en una parte algo elevada, desde allí se puede tener una vista panorámica de la ciudad.

My travel guide's description of the place wasn't very long, just a short paragraph, but that description of "Extreme Art" caught me. When I arrived at the facade, I was amazed by the artistic mix I saw there.

La reseña de mi guía de viaje sobre el lugar no era muy larga, apenas un corto párrafo, pero me atrapó esa descripción de “Arte Extremo”. Al llegar a la fachada quedé sorprendida por toda la mezcla artística que vi allí.

The entrance fee was a dollar, if I remember correctly. As soon as I stepped through the door, I started to see what it was all about. You had to look everywhere, because every wall, floor, etc., had something to say.

La entrada me costó un dólar, si mal no recuerdo. Apenas atravesé la puerta, comencé a ver de qué iba todo esto. Había que mirar a todos lados, porque todas las paredes, pisos, etc., tenían algo que decir.

I asked one of the people there greeting visitors about the history of this particular center, and he told me it was an initiative of the artist Eduardo Moscoso. Its activities began in 1996, with the idea that he would have a place to exhibit his creations, given that the themes he addressed were controversial and traditional galleries wouldn't give him the opportunity to show them.

Le pregunté a una de las personas que estaba allí recibiendo a los visitantes sobre la historia de este particular centro y me contó que fue una iniciativa del artista Eduardo Moscoso. Sus actividades comenzaron en el año 1996, con la idea de que él tuviera un lugar para exhibir sus creaciones, dado que los temas que abordaba eran polémicos y las galerías tradicionales no le daban la oportunidad de mostrarlas allí.

Religion, sex, death, spirits, and other potentially controversial topics are represented here in various ways. Perhaps at first I felt like I was in a haunted house, but as I looked at the works more closely, I perceived it differently.

Religión, sexo, muerte, espíritus y otros temas que pueden generar controversia, son los que se pueden ver aquí representados de distintas maneras. Quizás al principio me sentí como en una casa del terror, pero al ir viendo las obras con detenimiento, lo percibí de otra manera.

Forbidden Cultural Center not only exhibits the works of its founder, but over time it has become a place that supports other creators in the same style. In addition, it also hosts plays, performances, musical events, and video art exhibitions, among other activities. I enjoyed the experience, I think it's one of the strangest galleries I've ever visited.

Prohibido Centro Cultural no sólo exhibe las obras de su fundador, con el tiempo se convirtió en un lugar que apoya a otros creadores del mismo estilo. Además, aquí se hacen también obras de teatro, performances, eventos musicales y se exhibe video arte, entre otras actividades. Me gustó la experiencia, creo que es una de las galerías más extrañas que he visitado.

My cultural stroll continued to another institution, this time a traditional one: the Municipal Museum of Modern Art. I walked a few blocks and arrived at San Sebastián Square, where the church of the same name is located.

Mi paseo cultural continuó hacia otra institución, esta vez de las tradicionales: el Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno. Caminé unas cuantas cuadras y llegué a la Plaza de San Sebastián, donde se encuentra la iglesia del mismo nombre.

On the south side of this square stands the building that houses the museum. It's an old building, dating back to 1876. Its history has nothing to do with art: it has served as a rehabilitation center for alcoholics, a prison, an asylum for the elderly and homeless, a reformatory, a children's home, and a health center. Since 1981, it has been the Municipal Museum of Modern Art.

En la parte sur de esta plaza está la edificación que alberga al museo, es antigua, de 1876. Su historia nada tiene que ver con el arte: fue lugar para rehabilitar alcohólicos, cárcel, asilo para ancianos e indigentes, reformatorio, hogar para niños y centro de salud. Desde 1981 lo habilitaron para ser el Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno.

The exhibition there was of contemporary art, and curiously, it had the same thematic focus as what I saw at Forbidden Cultural Center. Angels, demons, Adam, Eve, pierced hearts...

La exposición que estaba allí era de arte contemporáneo, y curiosamente tenía la misma línea temática de lo que vi en Prohibido Centro Cultural. Ángeles, demonios, Adán, Eva, corazones atravesados...

There were also works made with recycled and kitchen materials. Besides temporary exhibitions, like the one I photographed, the museum has a collection of Ecuadorian and Latin American art.

También había obras realizadas con materiales de reciclaje y cocina. Aparte de las exposiciones temporales, como esta que fotografié, el museo posee una colección de arte ecuatoriano y latinoamericano.

The part I liked most about the building were the internal courtyards with their beautiful gardens, very characteristic elements of the colonial architectural legacy.

La parte que más me gustó de la edificación fueron los patios internos con sus bellos jardines, elementos muy característicos del legado arquitectónico colonial.
