Venezolanismos, a propósito de la app Venezolario [ESP-ENG]

Según la Real Academia Española (RAE), el venezolanismo es la "palabra o uso propios del español hablado en Venezuela", o también podría decirse: expresiones a las que la gente ha dado cierto significado a lo largo del tiempo y que han pasado a formar parte del lenguaje cotidiano y de la identidad del país.

According to the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), Venezuelanism is the "word or usage typical of the Spanish spoken in Venezuela," or one could also say: expressions to which people have given a certain meaning over time and which have become part of the everyday language and the identity of the country.

El mes pasado, los hermanos venezolanos Katty y Ronald Kanzler lanzaron una aplicación llamada Venezolario, que rápidamente se convirtió en tendencia nacional y puso a muchísima gente a participar en este juego de acertijos de palabras usadas en el vocabulario coloquial. Incluso hubo polémica en redes sociales porque algunas personas, sobre todo los más jóvenes, se quejaban de que nunca habían escuchado muchas de esas palabras, creando un enfrentamiento con los mayores que les dijeron que les faltaba cultura, lectura, etc 😂. Y es que para poder avanzar en el juego hay que ir superando niveles.

Last month, Venezuelan siblings Katty and Ronald Kanzler launched an app called Venezolario, which quickly became a national trend and got a lot of people participating in this puzzle game of words used in colloquial vocabulary. There was even controversy on social media because some people, especially the younger ones, complained that they had never heard of many of those words, creating a confrontation with the older ones who told them that they lacked culture, reading, etc. 😂. And it is that in order to advance in the game you have to beat levels.

Recordé que hace mucho tiempo había recortado de un periódico un pequeño diccionario de venezolanismos, y con ellos estoy ilustrando esta publicación para que los que no son de Venezuela pero hablan español, puedan divertirse un rato con estas palabras y los significados que les damos aquí.

I remembered that a long time ago I had cut out a small dictionary of Venezuelan expressions from a newspaper, and with them I am illustrating this publication so that those who are not from Venezuela but speak Spanish can have some fun with these words and the meanings we give them here.

Ahora, para los que no hablan español y algún día nos visitan, saber el significado de unas cuantas palabras como estas que les dejo aquí, que no encontrarán en un diccionario tradicional ni en un traductor web, también les puede ser muy útil, uno nunca sabe... 😄

Now, for those who don't speak Spanish and visit us someday, knowing the meaning of a few words like these that I leave here, which you won't find in a traditional dictionary or in a web translator, can also be very useful, you never know... 😄

Al igual que debe pasar con el inglés, supongo, una de las cosas que sucede con este idioma, que aparte de España se habla en gran parte del continente americano, es que hay marcadas diferencias entre un país y otro, acentos, jergas, etc. Por eso aunque se hable la misma lengua, puede haber muchas dificultades en comprender lo que el otro está diciendo, de ahí surgen este tipo de diccionarios, digamos alternativos, para los venezolanismos, colombianismos, argentinismos, chilenismos, y pare de contar.

Just as it must be with English, I suppose, one of the things that happens with this language, which apart from Spain is spoken in much of the American continent, is that there are marked differences between one country and another, accents, slang, etc. That's why even if you speak the same language, there can be many difficulties in understanding what the other person is saying, hence these types of dictionaries, let's say alternatives, for Venezuelanisms, Colombianisms, Argentinianisms, Chileanisms, and so on.

Volviendo a la app Venezolario, en tan solo un mes desde su lanzamiento, ya es número uno en Venezuela, con más de un millón de descargas. Creo que aplicaciones como esta son una excelente herramienta educativa y cultural. ¿Qué opinan? ¿Lo han jugado?

A mí me parece súper divertido e interesante que existan palabras y expresiones que diferencien tanto a las regiones de un país como a los países que hablan el mismo idioma.
