In every town or city there are emblematic buildings that over the years have become a reference and that anyone who lives there knows, this is the case of the shopping center that I show you in this post, the Cilento.

En todo pueblo o ciudad existen edificios emblemáticos que con el paso de los años se han convertido en un referente y que cualquiera que viva allí conoce, este es el caso del centro comercial que les muestro en esta publicación, el Cilento.

Located on the main avenue of La Victoria, Venezuela, it bears the name of an Italian mountainous region, which suggests that those who built it were probably originally from that country. In my search for information I was not able to verify that, nor when it was inaugurated, but several people who are from the city affirm that this shopping center opened in the 70s.

Ubicado en la avenida principal de La Victoria, Venezuela, lleva el nombre de una región montañosa italiana, lo que sugiere que quienes lo construyeron probablemente eran originarios de ese país. En mi búsqueda de información no logré verificar eso, ni cuándo fue inaugurado, pero varias personas que son de la ciudad afirman que este centro comercial abrió sus puertas en los años 70.

It had been a long time since I had visited it, one day I passed by and I decided to go in, I remember that years ago it was a very lively place, with a large supermarket run by Chinese, stores of all kinds, restaurants, gym, private and public offices, among other things.

Hacía mucho tiempo que no lo visitaba, un día pasé por allí y me animé a entrar, recuerdo que años atrás era un sitio bastante animado, con un gran supermercado regentado por chinos, tiendas de todo tipo, restaurantes, gimnasio, oficinas privadas y públicas, entre otras cosas.

But nowadays, the Cilento is dominated by emptiness, most of its stores are vacant, there are few people in the aisles and the general feeling is that it no longer looks like a shopping mall.

Pero hoy en día, el Cilento está dominado por el vacío, la mayoría de sus locales están desocupados, hay poca gente en los pasillos y la sensación general es que ya no parece un centro comercial.

The area of this building is quite large, with ground floor and four floors. Many of the state offices, where most people go, are on the third and fourth floors, but neither the elevators nor the escalators were working when I went, and I was told that they have been that way for some time. I suppose that since they have few active offices, they don't collect enough money to repair these services.

La superficie de esta edificación es bastante grande, con planta baja y cuatro pisos. Muchas de las oficinas estatales, donde más gente acude, están en el tercer y cuarto piso, pero ni los ascensores ni las escaleras mecánicas funcionaban cuando fui, y me dijeron que tienen tiempo así. Supongo que como tienen pocos locales activos, no recaudan suficiente dinero para reparar estos servicios.

Despite this situation, a reflection of the economic crisis that Venezuela has experienced in recent years, the floors, walls and ceilings of the place were clean. I find the internal architectural design of the mall very attractive, especially the checkered floor.

A pesar de esta situación, reflejo de la crisis económica que ha vivido Venezuela en los últimos años, los pisos, paredes y techos del lugar estaban limpios. El diseño arquitectónico interno del centro comercial me parece muy atractivo, destaca sobre todo el piso ajedrezado.

The plants in the planters on the internal balconies were well cared for, adding a cozy touch to the environment.

Las plantas de las jardineras de los balcones interiores estaban bien cuidadas, lo que le da un toque acogedor al ambiente.

Some believe that this decadent phase of the Cilento is not only due to the crisis, but also to the growth of the city, with the opening of other more attractive shopping centers.

Algunos opinan que esta fase decadente del Cilento no se debe sólo a la crisis, sino también al crecimiento de la ciudad, con la apertura de otros centros comerciales más atractivos.

I think it still has potential, but certainly in these times it needs good marketing and modernization to survive.

Creo que aún tiene potencial, pero sin duda en los tiempos que corren necesita un buen marketing y modernización para sobrevivir.
