Las Grietas: Discovering an amazing work of nature, Galapagos Islands - The Ecuador diary / Las Grietas: Descubriendo una asombrosa obra de la naturaleza, Islas Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador
On my fourth day of traveling through the legendary Galapagos Islands, I looked for a budget-friendly plan to save money and decided to follow a recommendation from the guidebook I had with me: to visit Las Grietas (The Cracks). I read the description and it appealed to me although there were no photos of the place, so it would all be a surprise.
I left the hotel around 9:00 am, had breakfast, and then went to buy some food to take with me on the excursion. To get to Las Grietas I had to go to the main docks in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, which weren't far from the hotel, and take a water taxi to Punta Angermeyer. That's what I did; in just a few minutes I was there, and to continue to my destination I only had to walk along a path towards the Finch Bay Hotel.
The landscape I was beginning to see was very striking; volcanic places always surprise you with their oddities.
I was told the walk to Las Grietas wasn't long, only 15 to 20 minutes, so I didn't rush and stopped to take pictures wherever I felt like it. There was a small beach to one side of the path.
Then, a paved section with some stairs. It's not difficult at all; it's an easy path with the unique flora of the Galapagos Islands accompanying you and making the walk enjoyable.
Suddenly, the landscape became even more interesting when I came across some salt flats. A series of small pink pools dotted with black rocks.
The trail to Las Grietas continues along a narrow path to one side. The terrain is quite uneven, with many rocks, so it's a good idea to wear appropriate footwear. I used my trekking sandals, which are ideal if you're likely to get wet because they dry quickly.
Apart from the pink salt flats, whose salt is used in local cuisine, there are also several lagoons here, all full of life.
I finally arrived at Las Grietas and was blown away by nature's creativity. It wasn't too crowded, but the space is small, so you have to find a free rock to sit on, leave your things, and enjoy a swim in this incredible geological formation.
As you can see in the photos, Las Grietas are two giant rock walls with water in between. This water is brackish, meaning it's a mixture of fresh and seawater.
Before going into the water, I spent some time observing this natural pool. Its waters are crystal clear, and you can easily see the marine life there. It's also a dream spot for those who like to jump from heights; several people were doing just that, prompting shouts and applause from those of us watching.
When I got into the water, which was a bit cold, I realized that this kind of abyss was quite deep. I swam from one end to the other of these impressive walls, and seeing parts of the bottom because the water was so clear made me feel as if I were suspended in an ethereal space.
I spent most of my time there swimming, and since my camera wasn't waterproof, I didn't take many photos. If you ever travel to the Galapagos Islands, don't miss this work of art sculpted by ancient volcanic eruptions 😉.

How beautiful and clear is the water in the natural pool. I know the water in these places is cold, as you also say, but it's a joy to feel it anyway. But the jump... omg, those who were jumping are really brave, I would be scared to do that haha
I hope you had a nice Christmas day 😇
Yes! Swimming there was a complete delight. It would have been amazing to have had the courage to jump in, haha 💦.
Thank you @mipiano! ❤️ Have a happy New Year! ✨

🥰 @sofathana
