Journey to the centre of the world - The Ecuador diary 🌎 🎯 Viaje al centro del mundo - El diario de Ecuador

One of the most promoted aspects of this South American country is the fact that from its capital city you can reach the centre of the world, and of course, I didn't want to miss out on this experience. So on my third day in Ecuador, I went to visit La Mitad del Mundo (The Middle of the World).

Una de las cosas más promocionadas de este país sudamericano es el hecho de que desde su capital puedes llegar a pisar el centro del mundo, y por supuesto, no me quise perder esta experiencia. Así que en mi tercer día en Ecuador, fui a visitar La Mitad del Mundo.

This kind of theme park is located about 13 km north of Quito and is easily accessible by bus. I went on a Sunday, it was quite crowded and sunny, with perfect lighting for taking photographs.

Esta especie de parque temático está situado a unos 13 km al norte de Quito y se puede llegar fácilmente en autobús. Fui un domingo, había bastante gente y hacía sol, con una iluminación perfecta para hacer fotos.

Admission was free for most attractions, such as the Cultural Walk with its pavilions and the insectarium; and to access the planetarium and the Ethnographic Museum, where the main monument is located, admission was $3.

La entrada era gratuita para la mayoría de las atracciones, como el Paseo Cultural con los pabellones, el insectario; y para acceder al planetario y al Museo Etnográfico, donde se encuentra el monumento principal, la entrada eran $3.

But why is this place so iconic? Well, because the country takes its name from the Equator, which divides the planet Earth into the northern and southern hemispheres, and this imaginary line passes right through here. As for the history of this park, it was inaugurated in 1992 as a tribute to the French Geodesic Mission that arrived in these lands in 1736 to measure a quadrant of the meridian arc and verify the shape of the Earth. These scientists measured and determined that the equator line was in this area.

Pero, ¿por qué es tan icónico este lugar? Bueno, porque el país toma su nombre de la Línea Ecuatorial, que divide al planeta Tierra en hemisferio norte y sur, y esta línea imaginaria pasa precisamente por aquí. En cuanto a la historia de este parque, se inauguró en 1992 como un homenaje a la Misión Geodésica Francesa que llegó a estas tierras en 1736 para medir un cuadrante del arco del meridiano y verificar la forma de la Tierra. Estos científicos midieron y determinaron que la línea del ecuador se encontraba en esta zona.

I began my tour of the Middle of the World City on Avenida de los Geodésicos (Avenue of the Geodesists), where the busts of the honoured scientists are located, and then I entered the pavilions. First, I visited one called Colonial Quito, where the city was represented in spectacular models.

Comencé mi paseo por la Ciudad Mitad del Mundo en la Avenida de los Geodésicos, donde están los bustos de los científicos homenajeados, y luego entré a los pabellones. Visité primero uno llamado Quito colonial, donde estaba representada la ciudad en espectaculares maquetas.

Here, the history of Quito was told, and the details of these models were impressive. In addition, the lighting was programmed to change so that visitors could see the colonial city both during the day and at night.

Aquí se contaba la historia de Quito, y los detalles que tenían estas maquetas eran impresionantes. Además la iluminación estaba programada para cambiar y así ver la ciudad colonial tanto de día como de noche.

Then I went into the Guayasamín Pavilion, where you can see a series of works by this contemporary artist, one of Ecuador's most important, and nearby is the sundial. I also visited the Sun Pavilion, the French Pavilion, the Spanish Pavilion and the insectarium, but I got distracted by so much information and didn't take any photos.

Luego entré al Pabellón Guayasamín, donde se puede ver una serie de obras de este artista contemporáneo, uno de los más importantes de Ecuador, y cerca de allí se encuentra el reloj de sol. También visité el Pabellón del Sol, el Pabellón de Francia, el Pabellón de España y el insectario, pero me distraje con tanta información y no tomé ninguna foto.

As I left this area, I encountered the most representative animals of this part of the world, llamas and alpacas. Oblivious to the hustle and bustle around them, they were there eating peacefully.

Al salir de esta zona, me encontré con los animales más representativos de esta parte del mundo, las llamas y las alpacas. Ajenas al bullicio a su alrededor, estaban allí comiendo tranquilamente.

Now it's time to visit the Equatorial Monument, which also houses the Ethnographic Museum, with exhibitions on the indigenous groups of the country's regions: the Coast, the Highlands and the Amazon.

Ahora sí, llegó el momento de conocer el Monumento Ecuatorial, que alberga también el Museo Etnográfico, con exposiciones sobre los grupos indígenas de las regiones del país: Costa, Sierra y Amazonía.

This monument, built in 1982, measures 30 metres. It looks quite imposing from below, and at the top there is a globe.

Este monumento, construido en 1982, mide 30 metros. Luce bastante imponente desde abajo, y en su parte superior hay un globo terráqueo.

Before climbing up to the viewpoint at the highest point of the monument, I took the photo that everyone takes here, right where the equator line is. It's not every day that you can have one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern hemisphere at the same time 😃.

Antes de subir al mirador, en el punto más alto del monumento, me tomé la foto que todo el mundo se toma aquí, justo donde se encuentra la línea del ecuador. No todos los días puedes tener un pie en el hemisferio norte y el otro en el sur al mismo tiempo 😃.

Once at the top, the 360º view of the entire park is fantastic. This region has a dry climate, which is evident in the arid mountains surrounding it.

Una vez en la cima, la vista de 360º de todo el parque es fantástica. Esta región tiene un clima seco, lo que se hace evidente en las áridas montañas que la rodean.

This monument was built with materials such as iron, cement and andesite stone. The globe that crowns it measures 4.5 metres and weighs 5 tonnes.

Este monumento se construyó con materiales como el hierro, el cemento y la piedra de andesita. El globo terráqueo que lo corona mide 4,5 metros y pesa 5 toneladas.

Although it was a very sunny day, it wasn't hot because it was very windy, so I stayed there taking photographs for quite a while.

Aunque el día estaba muy soleado, no hacía calor porque había mucho viento, así que me quedé allí fotografiando un buen rato.

When I came down from there, it was already around 2:00 in the afternoon, so I went to see what options there were for something to eat. I saw an ice cream parlour and went straight there to buy, I wanted something refreshing.

Cuando bajé de allí ya eran como las 2:00 de la tarde, entonces fui a ver qué opciones había para comer algo. Vi una heladería y me fui directo a comprar allí, quería algo refrescante.

Next door there were also shops and craft stalls. I didn't buy anything, but I stood there looking at the clothes the craftspeople were wearing, very beautiful.

Al lado también había tiendas y puestos de artesanía, no compré nada, pero me quedé mirando la ropa que tenían puesta los artesanos, muy bonita.

Then I found out that after many years and with advances in GPS technology, it was confirmed that the equator does not pass exactly through here, but about 240 metres away. Well, it's still pretty close.

Luego me enteré que después de muchos años y con los avances de la tecnología GPS, se confirmó que la línea del ecuador no pasa exactamente por aquí, sino a unos 240 m. Bueno, de todos modos es bastante cerca.
