I drew my friends / Dibujé a mis amigas

One of the things I like the most about drawing people I know, is that when you show them your work, you get feedback, their impressions, and it's very exciting to see their faces and gestures when they see themselves there. For example I have done portraits of artists like The Beatles or Elvis Presley, which I have shared here on my blog, but I will never know their opinions, so drawing friends is something fun because they will tell you if they liked it or not, you know, criticism is always necessary to improve.

In these portraits I show you, there are five girls, my college friends and me. I made them a long time ago and that's why I can't share the step by step here, however I can describe a little bit how it was done.

As for the materials, I only used my sketchbook, a graphite pencil and an eraser. Also, in order to make us look as close to reality as possible, I used several photos of us. This exercise was also the first time I drew myself, it was a little weird 😂, but interesting to do.

One thing I think I failed to do is that I should have used a thicker paper. When I repeatedly pressed the pencil on some of the features of the faces to achieve the desired result, the paper began to undulate, so the surface was uneven, and for example when scanning the portraits or taking a picture of them, that is noticeable, it creates some shadows, that would not have happened with a thicker paper.

Anyway, when I showed them to my friends, they were shocked, they had no idea I was doing something like this 😂, and except for some details like the hair or eyebrows, in general the feedback they gave me was very good. I gave them all a photocopy of these portraits, a gift for the memory.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de dibujar a personas que conozco, es que al mostrarles tu trabajo, recibes el feedback, sus impresiones, y es muy emocionante ver sus caras y gestos al verse allí plasmados. Por ejemplo he hecho retratos de artistas como The Beatles o Elvis Presley, que he compartido aquí en mi blog, pero nunca sabré las opiniones de ellos, entonces dibujar a los amigos es algo divertido porque te dirán si les gustó o no, ya saben, la crítica siempre es necesaria para mejorar.

En estos retratos que les muestro, estamos cinco chicas, mis amigas de la universidad y yo. Los hice hace mucho tiempo y por eso no puedo compartir el paso a paso aquí, sin embargo puedo describir un poco cómo fue su realización.

En cuanto a los materiales, sólo utilicé mi cuaderno de dibujo, un lápiz de grafito y un borrador. Asimismo, para lograr que quedáramos lo más parecido posible a la realidad, usé varias fotos de nosotras. Este ejercicio fue además la primera vez que me dibujé a mí misma, fue un poco raro 😂, pero interesante de hacer.

Algo en lo que pienso fallé, es que debí haber usado un papel más grueso. Al afincar el lápiz reiteradamente sobre algunas de las facciones de los rostros para lograr el resultado deseado, el papel empezó a ondularse, entonces la superficie quedó irregular, y por ejemplo al escanear los retratos o tomarles una foto, eso se nota, se crean como unas sombras, eso no hubiese pasado con un papel de mayor grosor.

En fin, cuando se los mostré a mis amigas, quedaron impactadas, no tenían idea de que yo estaba haciendo algo así 😂, y exceptuando algunos detalles como el cabello o las cejas, en general el feedback que me dieron fue muy bueno. A todas les di una fotocopia de estos retratos, un regalo para el recuerdo.
