Going down the mountain and walking along the river to reach the well El Guaical, La Sierra, Cojedes - Venezuela / Bajando la montaña y caminando por el río para llegar al Pozo El Guaical, La Sierra, Cojedes - Venezuela

We knew that this trip was going to be a lot of nature, although we didn't have such detailed information, so every place we visited was a surprise. We also didn't imagine that most of the itinerary was quite extreme, but as we all like adventure, the difficult parts didn't stop us and we enjoyed every moment.

Sabíamos que este viaje iba a ser de mucha naturaleza, aunque no teníamos información tan detallada, así que cada lugar que visitamos fue una sorpresa. Tampoco imaginábamos que la mayor parte del itinerario era bastante extremo, pero como a todos nos gusta la aventura, las partes difíciles no nos detuvieron y disfrutamos de cada momento.

As I told in the previous post, we arrived at La Sierra at night, and early the next day we went to make the first route around the area.

Como conté en la publicación anterior, llegamos a La Sierra de noche, y al día siguiente temprano en la mañana nos fuimos a hacer la primera ruta por la zona.

As we were told that we had to wear shoes that could get wet because we would be walking along the river, that day I didn't wear my boots but my old hiking sandals that I had taken to be sewn some time ago because they had become unstuck. I decided to wear them with socks, because sometimes the rubbing had given me blisters.

Como nos dijeron que debíamos llevar zapatos que se pudieran mojar porque caminaríamos por el río, ese día no me puse las botas sino mis viejas sandalias de senderismo que hace tiempo mandé a coser ya que se habían despegado. Decidí usarlas con medias (calcetines), porque a veces el roce me había sacado ampollas.

The day was beautiful, with blue skies and no clouds. Before leaving the inn one of the guides told us a little about the place we were going to, that they were going to take ropes just in case and that the group should try to stay together because there were some detours and they didn't want anyone to get lost.

El día estaba lindo, con cielo azul y sin nubes. Antes de partir de la posada uno de los guías nos habló un poco del lugar al que iríamos, que se iban a llevar cuerdas por si acaso y que el grupo tratara de mantenerse unido porque había algunos desvíos y no querían que nadie se perdiera.

It was about 9:30 am when we took a dirt path next to the inn and began our hike.

Eran como las 9:30 am cuando tomamos un sendero de tierra al lado de la posada y comenzamos la caminata.

As we are in the summer or dry season in Venezuela, dust was rising with every step we took.

Como estamos en verano o temporada seca en Venezuela, el polvo se levantaba a cada paso que dábamos.

In this shortcut we start to see the beautiful mountain scenery of La Sierra, we pass by some houses and then we come out to the main street of the village.

En este atajo empezamos a ver el bello paisaje montañoso de La Sierra, pasamos por algunas casas y luego salimos a la calle principal del pueblo.

Of course, as in every city or town in Venezuela, there is no lack of a Plaza Bolivar here, and no lack of a church nearby it.

Por supuesto, como en toda ciudad o pueblo de Venezuela, no falta aquí una Plaza Bolívar, y tampoco una iglesia cerca de ella.

We paused briefly at the site to wait for another guide and then continued on, again getting onto dirt trails and passing several properties.

Hicimos una breve pausa en el lugar para esperar a otro guía y luego continuamos, metiéndonos de nuevo por senderos de tierra y pasando por varias propiedades.

These lands, located at an average altitude of 950 meters above sea level, produce mainly bananas, avocados, black beans, pigeon peas, yams, tomatoes, coffee, among other crops. In addition to agriculture, there are cattle, and horses and donkeys that facilitate the work of the people.

En estas tierras, ubicadas en promedio a unos 950 metros de altitud, se producen principalmente cambures (bananas), aguacates, caraotas negras, quinchonchos, ñame, tomate, café, entre otros cultivos. Además de lo agrícola, hay ganado vacuno y caballos y burros que facilitan las labores de la gente.

Our route got hotter and dustier, and as we descended, rockier, so we had to walk carefully to avoid tripping or slipping.

Nuestra ruta se puso más calurosa y polvorienta, y a medida que descendíamos, también más rocosa, por lo que había que caminar con cuidado para evitar tropiezos o resbalones.

After about 50 minutes of hiking, the descent became steeper and the vegetation thicker, giving us some shade here and there.

Cuando llevábamos unos 50 minutos de caminata, la bajada se hizo más pronunciada y la vegetación más espesa, dándonos un poco de sombra por aquí y por allá.

A couple of minutes later the first river crossing appeared, and the guide told us to wait there for a while for the others because we had already dispersed and at this point there was a trail that continued to another side and people could get confused and go that way.

Un par de minutos después apareció el primer cruce de río, y el guía nos dijo que esperáramos un rato allí a los demás porque ya nos habíamos dispersado y en este punto había un sendero que seguía hacia otro lado y la gente podía confundirse e irse por ahí.

More people from the group arrived and we continued, for a few meters the terrain was flat, with a lot of vegetation and some crops.

Llegó más gente del grupo y seguimos, por unos metros el terreno fue plano, con mucha vegetación y algunos sembradíos.

Then came another descent, we find ourselves among tall trees and began to listen to the sound of the water.

Luego vino otra bajada, nos encontramos entre altos árboles y empezamos a escuchar el sonido del agua.

The scenery already looked magical, I felt like I was in an adventure movie 😃. Around here we came across a first well, it was small but appetizing, some people in the group took a quick bath there to wash off the sweat from the road. Anyway, we waited here for a while because one of the guides reported that there were two people who had made a mistake at the first river crossing and had continued on, fortunately they didn't go too far and within a few minutes they arrived.

El escenario ya se veía mágico, me sentía como en una película de aventuras 😃. Por aquí nos topamos con un primer pozo, era pequeño pero apetecible, algunas personas del grupo se dieron un baño rápido allí para quitarse el sudor del camino. De todos modos esperamos un rato aquí porque uno de los guías informó que había dos personas que se habían equivocado en el primer paso de río y habían seguido de largo, afortunadamente no se alejaron demasiado y a los pocos minutos llegaron.

From this point on the route increased its level of difficulty, we got our feet wet and advanced between rocks, the river and stretches of land, always listening to the indications of the guide ahead of us.

A partir de aquí la ruta aumentó su nivel de dificultad, nos mojamos los pies y avanzamos entre rocas, el río y tramos de tierra, siempre oyendo las indicaciones del guía que iba adelante.

The water sources found in the town of La Sierra are within the boundaries of the Tirgua National Park, a protected area of 91,000 hectares.

Las nacientes de agua que se encuentran en la población de La Sierra están en los límites del Parque Nacional Tirgua, una superficie protegida de 91.000 hectáreas.

Suddenly the guide stopped and tied the rope to a tree, and so the route became extreme, little by little we all went down that rock and reached another well. In the group there were people of all ages, from a 10 year old girl to an 84 year old lady, what do you think? Hiking and adventure have no age 😉.

De repente el guía se detuvo y amarró la cuerda en un árbol, y así la ruta se volvió extrema, poco a poco todos fuimos bajando por esa roca y llegando a otro pozo. En el grupo había gente de todas las edades, desde una niña de 10 años hasta una señora de 84, ¿qué les parece? El senderismo y la aventura no tienen edad 😉.

Then came a part that made more than one of us tremble, including me 😅. We had to continue down the river and there was a waterfall that we had to pass, we thought that we would use the rope but the first ones to pass the guide told us that it was not necessary, just step where he stepped and that was it.

Luego vino una parte que puso a temblar a más de uno, incluyéndome 😅. Debíamos continuar bajando por el río y había una cascada que teníamos que pasar, pensamos que usaríamos la cuerda pero a los primeros en pasar el guía nos dijo que no hacía falta, que simplemente pisáramos donde él pisaba y listo.

I was a little scared but at the same time I trusted what he said because I saw him do it, so I just let myself go. We all thought that stepping where the water was flowing was slippery, but no, there the stone had a rough texture and you could step on it without problems, look at the photo, there is one of the companions standing there.

Me dio un poco de miedo pero a la vez confié en lo que él dijo porque lo vi hacerlo, entonces simplemente me dejé llevar. Todos pensamos que pisar donde el agua circulaba era resbaloso, pero no, allí la piedra tenía una textura rugosa y podías pisar sin problemas, miren en la foto, allí está parado uno de los compañeros.

After passing by I started to take some pictures of the others, the guides decided to put the rope there too because some people didn't feel safe crossing the waterfall as some of us did.

Después de pasar me puse a hacer algunas fotos de los demás, los guías decidieron poner la cuerda ahí también porque algunas personas no se sentían seguras cruzando la cascada como lo hicimos algunos de nosotros.

We continued, and in a descent by land something unexpected happened, there was a section infested with ants, they were big, and they quickly climbed on our feet. As I was wearing hiking sandals with socks, they stung my toes immediately, but I shook them off quickly. A colleague of mine was stung on her hand and it swelled up, fortunately she didn't have a more serious adverse reaction but the effect of the “killer ants” lasted more than two days...

Seguimos, y en una bajada por tierra sucedió algo inesperado, había un tramo infestado de hormigas, eran grandes, y se nos subieron rápidamente a los pies. Yo como llevaba unas sandalias de senderismo con medias (calcetines), me picaron en los dedos inmediatamente, pero me las sacudí rápido. A una compañera la picaron en la mano y se le hinchó, afortunadamente no tuvo otra reacción adversa más grave pero el efecto de las “hormigas asesinas” le duró más de dos días...

More pools were appearing along the way, beautiful blue waters, but we still had a little way to go to reach our destination.

Iban apareciendo más pozos en el camino, bellas aguas azules, pero todavía faltaba un poquito para llegar a nuestro destino.

Finally, about two and a half hours after starting this route, we were able to appreciate the beauty of El Guaical well, and of course, take a swim in its cold waters!

Finalmente, unas dos horas y media después de iniciar esta ruta, pudimos apreciar la belleza del pozo El Guaical, y claro, ¡lanzarnos a nadar en sus frías aguas!

Under the rock of the waterfall of this well there was a small cave, many of us went there to see, well, those of us who could swim, because it is deep.

Debajo de la roca de la cascada de este pozo había una pequeña cueva, muchos fuimos para allá a ver, bueno, los que sabíamos nadar, porque es hondo.

The most daring climbed on the rock to launch themselves while the rest of us cheered them on.

Los más osados se montaron en la roca para lanzarse mientras los demás los animábamos.

Here we ate, looking at this exotic landscape hidden among the mountains. I had brought my tuna salad, bread and cookies.

Aquí comimos, contemplando este exótico paisaje escondido entre las montañas. Yo había llevado mi ensalada de atún, pan y galletas.

Some companions ventured further down, where the guide said there were more incredible wells about half an hour away.

Algunos compañeros se aventuraron a ir más abajo, donde el guía dijo que había más pozos increíbles a una media hora de distancia.

We spent a couple of hours having fun in the divine waters of El Guaical, which by the way, according to the guide that name comes from a tree in the area.

Estuvimos un par de horas divirtiéndonos en las divinas aguas de El Guaical, que por cierto, según el guía ese nombre viene de un árbol que hay en la zona.

The return, even though we were going uphill most of the time, felt more relaxed. Arriving in town around 4:30 in the afternoon many of us still had energy, so a group of us decided to do a short route there, but I'll show you that in the next post 😊.

El regreso, a pesar de que íbamos en subida la mayor parte del tiempo, lo sentí más relajado. Al llegar al pueblo como a las 4:30 de la tarde aún muchos teníamos energía, así que un grupo decidimos hacer una ruta corta que hay allí, pero eso se los mostraré en la siguiente publicación 😊.
