Excursion through the unusual landscapes of Bartolome Island, Galapagos - The Ecuador diary / Excursión por los insólitos paisajes de la Isla Bartolomé, Galápagos - El diario de Ecuador

My trip to the Galapagos Islands was coming to an end, and on my last day there I went to visit Bartolome Island. The day before, I had been looking at the tour options offered by the agencies, and when I saw photos of this place, I made up my mind immediately.

Mi viaje a las Islas Galápagos estaba llegando a su fin, y en mi último día allí fui a visitar la isla Bartolomé. El día anterior había estado mirando las opciones de excursiones que ofrecían las agencias, y cuando vi las fotos de este lugar, me decidí inmediatamente.

Bartolomé Island is located in the central part of the Galapagos archipelago, and from Santa Cruz Island, where the excursion departed, it took about two hours to reach it by boat.

La isla Bartolomé se encuentra en la parte central del archipiélago de Galápagos, y desde la isla Santa Cruz, donde partió la excursión, había que navegar unas dos horas para llegar.

The boat wasn't very big, and there were about 10 tourists in our group. I sat at the back and moved around the sides or climbed the small ladder whenever I saw an interesting landscape to photograph.

El barco no era muy grande y en el grupo éramos unos 10 turistas. Me senté en la parte de atrás y me movía por los laterales o subía por la pequeña escalera cada vez que veía algún paisaje interesante para fotografiar.

As we headed out to sea, small islets appeared here and there. Most of them had strange shapes, which is normal in places of volcanic origin.

A medida que nos adentrábamos en el mar, aparecían pequeños islotes aquí y allá. La mayoría de ellos tenían formas extrañas, lo cual es normal en lugares de origen volcánico.

The weather was quite cloudy, which made the water look darker. As I leaned over the railing, I noticed something moving next to the boat: it was huge stingrays swimming alongside us. The movement of their fins was mesmerizing, pure poetry! I tried to take pictures of them, but I could only capture the shadow of one, its body protruding slightly from the water.

El tiempo estaba bastante nublado, lo que hacía que el agua pareciera más oscura. Mientras me asomaba por la barandilla, vi algo que se movía junto al barco: eran enormes rayas nadando a nuestro lado. El movimiento de sus aletas era hipnótico, ¡pura poesía! Intenté hacerles fotos, pero sólo pude capturar la sombra de una, con el cuerpo sobresaliendo ligeramente del agua.

On these small islets surrounding us, we could also see many birds. It was drizzling a little, and they seemed happy fluttering between those pieces of land and rock and the sea.

En estos pequeños islotes que nos rodeaban, también pudimos ver muchas aves. Estaba lloviznando un poco y ellas se veían felices revoloteando entre esos pedazos de tierra y roca y el mar.

We had already been sailing for an hour and a half, and we began to see larger islands. We were approaching our main destination, Bartolome Island, which is located near San Salvador Island.

Ya teníamos una hora y media navegando, y empezamos a ver islas más grandes. Nos estábamos acercando a nuestro destino principal, la isla Bartolomé, que queda en los alrededores de la isla San Salvador.

A little later, we saw a huge, pointed rock jutting out from the shore in the distance. The guide told us that this was Bartolome Island and that this striking rock formation was the famous Pinnacle, one of the most photographed places in the Galapagos Islands.

Poco después, vimos una enorme roca puntiaguda que sobresalía de la costa en la distancia. El guía nos dijo que esa era la isla Bartolomé y esa llamativa formación rocosa era el famoso Pináculo, uno de los lugares más fotografiados de las Islas Galápagos.

Although Bartolome Island is small, with an area of 1.2 km², its otherworldly landscapes have made it a popular destination. We slowly approached the pier, where several animals appeared, as if welcoming us.

Aunque la Isla Bartolomé es pequeña, con una extensión de 1,2 km², sus paisajes de otro planeta la han convertido en un lugar muy visitado. Lentamente nos acercamos al muelle, por allí fueron apareciendo varios animales, como dándonos la bienvenida.

Herons, sea lions, turtles, sharks, penguins, red crabs, and many other animals can be seen on these coasts.

Garzas, lobos marinos, tortugas, tiburones, pingüínos, cangrejos rojos y muchos otros animales pueden ser vistos en estas costas.

Upon reaching land, we began to ascend gradually via a wooden walkway measuring approximately 600 meters. This structure was built to prevent soil erosion.

Al tocar tierra, comenzamos a ascender gradualmente por una pasarela de madera de aproximadamente 600 metros. Esta estructura se construyó para evitar la erosión del suelo.

You have to climb more than 370 steps to reach the top of the volcanic cone and enjoy the incredible views of Pinnacle Rock and Sullivan Bay.

Hay que subir más de 370 escalones para llegar a la cima del cono volcánico y disfrutar de las increíbles vistas de la Roca Pináculo y la Bahía de Sullivan.

While we were reaching the summit, at 114 meters, we had views of the sea on one side and the spectacular lava landscapes of this island on the other.

Mientras alcanzábamos la cima, a 114 metros, teníamos por un lado las vistas al mar y por el otro los espectaculares paisajes de lava de esta isla.

When they offer you the excursion, many agencies tell you that it's like traveling to the moon, and the truth is that they're not lying. The aridity of Bartolome Island, its diverse volcanic formations such as lava flows and scoria and tuff cones, make you feel like you're on another planet.

Cuando te ofrecen la excursión, muchas agencias te dicen que es como viajar a la luna, y la verdad es que no mienten. La aridez de la isla Bartolomé, sus diversas formaciones volcánicas, como los flujos de lava y los conos de salpicadura y toba, te hacen sentir como si estuvieras en otro planeta.

Although the weather was cloudy and the colors weren't as vivid due to the lack of sun, you could still appreciate the different shades of the rocks: black, orange, red, and even green.

Aunque el tiempo estaba nublado y los colores no se veían tan vivos por falta de sol, de todos modos se podían apreciar los diferentes tonos de las rocas: negras, naranjas, rojas y hasta verdes.

Incidentally, the island is named Bartolome in honor of the hydrographer Bartolomeu James Sullivan, who accompanied the famous scientist Charles Darwin as chief surveyor and second lieutenant on his voyage through this archipelago aboard the Beagle.

Por cierto, la isla se llama Bartolomé en honor al hidrógrafo Bartolomeu James Sullivan, quien acompañó al famoso científico Charles Darwin como jefe de topografía y subteniente en su viaje por este archipiélago a bordo del Beagle.

Near the summit, the landscape becomes even more unusual, surreal. In addition, it was quite windy, which pushed you and made the climb a little difficult.

Cerca de la cima, el paisaje se vuelve aún más insólito, surrealista. Además, hacía bastante viento, que te empujaba dificultando un poco la subida.

Upon arrival, the panoramic view is breathtaking. The figure of Pinnacle Rock next to the two beaches is one of the most iconic images of the Galapagos Islands.

Al llegar, la vista panorámica es impresionante. La figura de la Roca Pináculo junto a las dos playas es una de las postales más icónicas de las Islas Galápagos.

From there, you can also see Santiago Island, which is practically next door, as well as the small volcanic cones Daphne Major and Minor.

Desde allí también se puede ver la isla Santiago, que está prácticamente al lado, así como los pequeños conos volcánicos Daphne Mayor y Menor.

We spent quite a while at this fabulous viewpoint. As there were no other tourists there when we arrived, we were able to enjoy the place in peace.

Estuvimos un buen rato en este fabuloso mirador. Como no había otros turistas cuando llegamos, pudimos disfrutar del lugar con tranquilidad.

The trip didn't end there; we then visited Sullivan Bay, but I'll show you that in the next post.
