A few days ago, the mayor's office announced that another emblematic space in the city would be restored, the Nuevo Circo de La Victoria, Aragua State (Venezuela), a bullring inaugurated on November 24, 1929 and which functioned as such until well into the 21st century.

Hace unos días, la alcaldía anunció que otro espacio emblemático de la ciudad sería restaurado, se trata del Nuevo Circo de La Victoria, estado Aragua (Venezuela), una plaza de toros inaugurada el 24 de noviembre de 1929 y que funcionó como tal hasta bien entrado el siglo XXI.

I didn't find information about the precise date when it closed, but I did find some reviews of bullfights in 2000. Fortunately, it has been a long time since this nefarious activity left by the Spaniards is no longer performed here, the torture and cruelty towards these imposing animals is no longer a spectacle.

No encontré información sobre la fecha exacta en que cerró, pero sí unas reseñas de corridas del año 2000. Afortunadamente, hace mucho tiempo que esta nefasta actividad legada por los españoles ya no se ejecuta aquí, la tortura y la crueldad hacia estos imponentes animales dejó de ser un espectáculo.

I went for a walk around there, to see if the work had started, and it has, the facade is already being repaired, and inside there are movements as well, they are removing debris, cutting the weeds that have taken over many parts, etc. As I only had access to the outside, these are the images I can share for now of the place.

Me di una vuelta por allí, para ver si las obras habían comenzado, y así es, ya la fachada está siendo reparada, y en su interior hay movimientos también, están sacando escombros, cortando la maleza que se ha apoderado de muchas partes, etc. Como no tuve acceso más que a la parte externa, estas son las imágenes que puedo compartir por ahora del lugar.

This bullring, designed by Venezuelan architect Rafael Seijas Cook and currently owned by the State, has been a Municipal Historic Monument since 1992. It is not the first time it has undergone a restoration process, it has had several throughout its history, the most recent, as I recall, was more than 10 years ago, when the mayor's office recovered it to be used as a cultural space, but after a while it was abandoned again, I guess due to mismanagement or lack of resources.

Esta plaza de toros, obra del arquitecto venezolano Rafael Seijas Cook y actualmente propiedad del Estado, es Monumento Histórico Municipal desde 1992. No es la primera vez que pasa por un proceso de restauración, ha tenido varios a lo largo de su historia, el más reciente, si mal no recuerdo, fue hace más de 10 años, cuando la alcaldía la recuperó para que fuera usada como espacio cultural, pero luego de un tiempo volvió a ser abandonada, supongo que por mala gestión o falta de recursos.

Originally, it had a capacity for 2,400 spectators, after the repairs it is undergoing, it will probably house more or less the same number of people, with the great difference that its spaces will no longer be used for violence and torture, but will be dedicated to culture and recreation.

Originalmente, tenía capacidad para 2.400 espectadores, seguramente luego de los arreglos a los que está siendo sometida, albergará más o menos esa misma cantidad de personas, con la gran diferencia de que sus espacios ya no serán usados para la violencia y tortura sino que estarán dedicados a la cultura y la recreación.

Architecturally it is a very striking building, its circular shape makes it stand out among the straight lines that dominate the street where it is located. According to what I read in the catalog of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Venezuela, its structure is made of reinforced concrete and masonry, it also says: “It was elaborated of tapia, adobones, bricks, blocks filled with cement, metallic profiles and ‘zen zen’ meshes in the bleachers, zinc roof and an iron over structure”.

Arquitectónicamente es una edificación muy llamativa, su forma circular hace que destaque entre las líneas rectas que dominan la calle donde se encuentra. Según leí en el catálogo del Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de Venezuela, su estructura es de concreto armado y mampostería, también dice: “Fue elaborado de tapia, adobones, ladrillos, bloques rellenos de cemento, perfiles metálicos y mallas de ‘zen zen’ en las gradas, techo de zinc y una sobre estructura de hierro.”

This restoration project will have several phases, it has not yet been announced what specifically the Nuevo Circo de La Victoria will offer in its new life, but there has been talk of an area for concerts and other artistic events, exhibition halls, training areas, among other speculations.
