The Image Of God. MCGI TOPIC REVIEW
The image of God which the Bible is talking about at creation is a spiritual one. "God created man in His image" - is it physical or figurative? It is neither physical nor figurative. The image of God is a spiritual one. God is a spirit. God is not just a physical being. In fact, there's nothing about God that is figurative. God is real so there is no way His image could be figurative. The image of God is a spiritual image. The Lord Jesus Christ explained that God is a Spirit therefore, those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. That was a contrast. He was contrasting the physical nature with the spiritual nature. So, he concluded that though we are physical beings, we cannot relate with God that way. We can only relate with God spiritually.
Which way can we illustrate this spiritual nature of God? The Bible attributes to our God holiness. It says that the sceptre of His kingdom is righteousness. Therefore we can rightly say that one of the characteristics of this nature of God is righteousness. Our God is a righteous God. The Bible says that the eyes of the Lord are too holy to behold iniquity. God cannot relate with unrighteousness. The Bible says that it is our sins that separate us from the Lord.
We can also recall that the Bible calls our God a merciful God. It says that God is rich in mercy. That is another characteristics of the nature of God. The Bible tells us that those who are merciful are blessed. These are those who will receive mercy themselves. That means that we are to be merciful because we were created in the image of God.
