FungiFriday: Dead Man's Fingers 2025 (Xylaria) (Engl / Spn)

Today is Friday, and it's #FungiFriday. This is my third mushroom post of the 2025 season, and although it's been raining steadily, I haven't seen a large number of mushrooms on my plot. Perhaps they need more time to grow, or perhaps there's less decaying plant material this year. In any case, it's always possible to see some of the mushrooms that usually emerge with the arrival of the rains, and this is the case with Xilarias, which I talked about in posts from last year, 2024.

Hoy es viernes, y es #FungiFriday. Este es mi tercer post de setas de la temporada 2025, y aunque está lloviendo de forma regular, no he visto una gran cantidad de hongos en mi solar. Quizás hace falta más tiempo para que crezcan, o quizás es menor la cantidad de material vegetal en descomposición este año. En todo caso siempre es posible apreciar algunas de las setas que habitualmente emergen con la llegada de las lluvias, y este es el caso de las Xilarias, de las cuales hablé en posts del pasado año 2024.

I was examining some woody remains beneath the largest acerola tree (Malpighia emarginata), and I was able to see the growth of some tiny mushrooms again, which really resemble small fingers. This time I noticed they were darker than the ones that usually emerge with the arrival of the rains, so I deduce that they've been there for a while and I hadn't noticed them.

Estuve revisando unos restos de madera que están debajo del árbol más grande de acerola (Malpighia emarginata), y pude ver nuevamente, el crecimiento de unos honguitos, que realmente asemejan a pequeños deditos. Esta vez noté que son más oscuros de los que habitualmente emergen con la llegada de las lluvias, por lo que deduzco que ya tienen tiempo ahí y yo no los había visto.

Because of their elongated shape that tapers to a point, these mushrooms are also known as "dead man's fingers." This time, I noticed they grew abundantly on this piece of wood, to the point that it looked as if hair had grown on this plant fragment.

Debido a la forma alargada que se va estrechando en la punta, a estas setas también se les dicen dedos de muerto. Esta vez pude observar que crecieron abundantemente en este trozo de madera, al punto que parece que le hubiesen crecido pelos a este resto vegetal.

Like all species of Xylaria these fungi grow on remains of plant material, specifically decomposing wood, so their function, their ecological niche is very important for soil enrichment, since it makes plant remains bioavailable and integrated into the soil.

Como todas las especies de Xylaria estos hongos crecen en restos de material vegetal, específicamente madera en descomposición, por lo que su función, su nicho ecológico es muy importante para el enriquecimiento del suelo, ya que hace que los restos vegetales sean biodisponibles y se integren al suelo.

Rain is always a source of life, and it helps plants recover, animals have more food, and mushrooms can be seen, even if only for a few months.

These mushrooms are very unique, but they are abundant on my lot.
