Astraptes fulgerator: A beautiful and magic moth (ENG - SPN)

Good morning, afternoon, or evening. A few days ago, I was sunbathing, as I'm feeling better and need some mid-morning sun. By that time, the yard isn't so cold, and the breeze is warmer, so I sat near one of the guayacán trees (Guaiacum officinale). I was thinking about various things when I had the feeling that I was being watched. Perhaps it was my imagination, perhaps not, but I perceived this beautiful moth "observing" me.

Buenos días, tardes o noches. Días atrás tomaba el sol, pues ya me estoy sintiendo mejor, y necesito tomar sol de media mañana. A esa hora ya el solar no está tan frío, y la brisa que sopla es más cálida, así que me senté cerca de uno de los árboles de guayacán (Guaiacum officinale). Estaba yo pensando en diversas cosas, cuando tuve la sensación de que me miraban. Quizás fueron ideas mías, quizás no, pero percibí a esta hermosa polilla “observándome”.

I had never seen this type of moth before, and I know this because it's so beautiful that I could easily remember it. I was very surprised by the beautiful and vibrant turquoise blue color near its thorax, as well as the delicacy of its shape, how beautiful its antennae are, and how graceful it looks overall. I checked with Google Lens and found that its scientific name is Astraptes fulgerator, although, a synonym for this is also Telegonus fulgerator, and its common name is Two barred flasher, a name that describes it very aptly.

No había visto este tipo de polillas antes, y lo sé, porque es tan bella, que fácilmente podría recordarla. Me sorprendió mucho el hermoso y vibrante color azul turquesa que tiene cerca del tórax, así como la delicadeza de sus formas, lo hermosas que son sus antenas, y lo grácil que se ve en general. Estuve revisando coincidencia con Google Lens, y encontré que su nombre científico es Astraptes fulgerator, aunque también, la sinonimia de éste es Telegonus fulgerator, siendo su nombre común mariposa saltarina azul de dos barras, un nombre que le describe muy adecuadamente.

I've been researching this insect, and I didn't find much material—in fact, just one source, which I've included in the bibliography for this post. According to this information, this species is distributed from South Texas to Argentina, so it's normal that it exists where I live, even though this is the first time I've seen it. The description of the caterpillar indicates that it's brown with white hairs, but I haven't actually seen it in my yard. In fact, it's very rare for me to see caterpillars there, except for monarch butterfly caterpillars and another species of moth that feeds on my currant trees. Otherwise, it's very rare for that to happen.

Estuve investigando acerca de este insecto, y no conseguí mucho material, de hecho, uno solo, el cual incluyo en la bibliografía de este post. De acuerdo a esta información, esta especie se distribuye desde el Sur de Texas hasta Argentina, por lo que es normal que exista en donde vivo, aun cuando es primera vez que la veo. La descripción de la oruga indica que es marrón con pelillos blancos, pero realmente no le he visto en mi patio, de hecho, es muy raro que vea orugas ahí, excepto las de la mariposa monarca y otra especie de polilla que se alimenta de mis árboles de grosellas, de resto es muy raro que eso ocurra.

This literature also indicates that this species can live on many types of plants, so it can inhabit diverse ecosystems, but most frequently in scrublands and forests near the rainforest. I live in a dry area, in the Venezuelan plains, but there are many plants in my yard, perhaps that's why it felt comfortable and I was able to see it there.

Esta bibliografía también indica que esta especie puede vivir en muchos tipos de plantas, por lo que puede habitar diversos ecosistemas, pero con más frecuencia en matorrales y en bosques cercanos a la selva. Yo vivo en zona seca, en los llanos venezolanos, pero en mi solar existen muchas plantas, quizás por eso se sintió cómoda y la pude ver ahí.

I couldn't find any more information about it, but I can say that it is a very beautiful butterfly, which conveys peace, but also awakens admiration for how perfect and beautiful nature is.

No conseguí más información al respecto, pero puedo decir que es una mariposa muy bella, que transmite paz, pero también despierta admiración por lo perfecta y hermosa que es la naturaleza.
