A new artwork inspired by the Arbus photos (mixed media on paper)

Hello hivers, an happy Saturday to you all!
It's a warm sunny day here, the Sun is shining on the sky and we can breath the last air of Summer all around. The Autumn seems to be just around the corner.

Yesterday I started to work on a new piece of the series of artworks inspired by the beautiful photos by the american photographer Diane Arbus. Along the time I painted other ones on different surfaces (paper and canvas) and I sold the most part of them, so I thought to paint a new one.
This time I chose to leave my imagination free to work on the photo titled "Puerto Rican woman with a beauty mark, N.Y.C. 1965". Just few minutes ago I gave the last touches to the artwork and so you can see the final result in the following pics:

In the following pic you can see the artwork on my small working table with the original photo by the Arbus (I have a wonderful book with many photo by her):

It's a mixed media (acrylic colors and oil colors) painting on 300 gsm cotton paper in A3 size and, like I use to do, I took some pics while I was painting her so you can see the process too:

Soon I'll add this new artwork to my Artfinder shop (link at the bottom), hoping it will find a new home!

I hope you like it!
See ya soon and stay safe,
Silvia

I love what you did with the photo. Really brilliant! You took Diane Arbus back to middle ages.

I love so much the photos by Diane Arbus. When you watch them it seems the subjects are watching you. I started to work on them, trying to give them my own illustrative style, around 7-8 years ago and from time to time I come back to work on them. ❤️

Love that you chose Arbus’s Puerto Rican woman with a beauty mark and let your imagination take the lead. Mixing acrylic and oil on A3 300 gsm cotton paper feels spot on for that vibe. Do you seal the acrylic underpainting before the oil layers, or go straight in once it’s dry? My acrylics dry faster than my coffee, so I always second guess that step.

It was not simple to find the right way to use acrylic and oil together, but after many experiments, on this kind of paper, the best one for me was at first to give a layer of white gesso, when it's dried I worked on the background with acrylic and, when the acrylic is dried, I work on the subject with oil colors. This is just for this kind of paper, but when I work on a no cotton 220 gsm paper it's more simple, because the oil colors dry very fast on it and so I can work on different part of the painting using acrylic or oil.

That workflow clicks now. The white gesso seals the paper and gives a nice tooth, acrylic for the background, then oils for the subject. Love the tip about non cotton 220 gsm making oils set quicker. Do you ever tint the gesso first, or do you like it pure white?
