A lot of colorful knitted and crocheted squares in my city (Pistoia)! ❤️
Hello hivers, an happy Monday to you!
Today the Sun is shining on the sky and the Springtime seems to be in the air after the hard rain storms of the past days. I hope you spent a nice Sunday! Yesterday I spent a very nice day between a lot of wonderful blankets placed in the main square in my city (Pistoia, in Italy) and, as I promised in my previous content, I took a lot of pics to share with you.
The event was organized to to raise funds for some associations that work to help victims of domestic violence and similar. The event called "Viva Vittoria" (you can read more about it here) was part of other similar events organized in different city year by year.
The project is simple, but very very beautiful, because they asked to citizen to make knitted or crocheted squares. Those squares were stitched with a red thread (to mean the connession to each other) to create blankets. All those blankets (yesterday there were 4600 blankets!) covered the entire Piazza del Duomo and you can see that beauty in the following pics:
During the day, people could buy the blankets and, believe me, I went there at first in the morning and when I came back there with my mom (she made 75 crocheted squares for the event) a lot of blankets were bought.
Just to know, they decide to use the crocheted squares because this kind of activity (here our grand mother used to crochet and knit in small groups chatting and stay together) as a way to improve the attitude of encounters and relationships (and, for the most part of old people, to remember familiar habits.
See ya soon and stay safe,
Silvia

Absolutely fantastic! What a performance, almost all the women in the village have crocheted, a very good initiative. Unfortunately, it is not appreciated, here in Sweden every flea market is flooded with cute little tablecloths and potholders. In the past, the bride's chest was full of just that and embroidery.
Yes, it was really a fantastic performance, but I agree with you, crocheted things are not appreciated and also here in Italy in the flea markets there are many wonderful tablecloths and potholders and other similar ones. At home I have a large crochet blanket in white cotton yarn made around 50 years ago by the grand mother of my hubby, it's a fantastic piece of art for me but difficult to wash (just by hands ^_^) and maybe because these pieces need a lot of care young people prefer different (more simple to take care of) things for home.
