Wednesday Walk and Tamales

T A M A L E S !!!

Tamales have gone global!

With their long history and deep cultural roots, they've captured hearts and taste buds across continents. While they're still a top favorite in Latin American countries like Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Colombia, their deliciousness has spread far and wide.

Tamales are pretty popular in the U.S.

So, what’s a tamale all about? It starts with masa dough, which is like a soft, doughy base. Inside, you'll find all sorts of tasty fillings like pork, chicken, beef, cheese, or beans. Traditionally, they’re wrapped up in a plantain leaf or corn husk and steamed to perfection. You might see them served straight out of the leaf or plated up. Either way, they’re delicious!

I picked up half a dozen tamales

for $20 to help raise funds for the new church we're building. Not only did I get some tasty tamales, but I also got to support a great cause in the process.

IMG_2467 - Copy.JPG

It's a win-win

Enjoying delicious food and knowing that my contribution is helping our community come together to create a meaningful space... it is all worth it!

Tamales have a cool history

Tamales goes way back to Mesoamerica, which is the region from central Mexico all the way to northern Costa Rica. The indigenous people who lived there are the ones who started making tamales, and they might date back to as early as 7000 BC!

IMG_2469 - Copy (2).JPG

The dough used in tamales, called masa.

Masa is made from ground maize, or corn. For these ancient cultures, maize wasn’t just food— it was a big deal and a part of their celebrations. They often used tamales and other maize-based offerings in their religious ceremonies, showing just how important maize was to their lives.

IMG_2470 - Copy (2).JPG

As the Spanish arrived and brought European influence to North and Central America

Tamales started to spread too. The Spanish got a taste for tamales in indigenous communities of Mesoamerica and took them along as they moved into North America.

IMG_2471 - Copy (2).JPG

Along with colonization came Catholicism

Tamales became linked to major Catholic holidays. That’s why in many Latino families, tamales are now a cherished Christmas tradition!

IMG_2473 - Copy (2).JPG

Spreading the tamale love

By the 1870s, tamale carts had become quite common on the streets of Los Angeles, spreading the tamale love far and wide. Meanwhile, in Mississippi, some communities took the traditional tamale recipe and added their own delicious twist. They started frying tamales and spicing them up with hot peppers for an extra kick.

IMG_2475 - Copy.JPG

Fast forward to today

Tamales have evolved into countless variations and are savored by people around the globe. From classic recipes passed down through generations to innovative new takes, the tamale continues to be a beloved culinary delight.

I'm glad you enjoyed the post! Tamales truly are a holiday delight, especially with all those amazing flavors you find in the Southwest. Now I'm craving some too! 🌽🌶️ What's your favorite filling for tamales, @thebighigg? Mine is pork! And chicken, !LOL

I've only had Tamales a couple of times in my life, but I remember they were good. I know a lot of places do them like they do BBQ and bakeries, they only make so many for the day and when they are gone they are out.

Totally get that! Tamales are like treasure— you gotta grab 'em before they're gone, @bozz. 😄 There's something really special about that fresh, homemade taste that's hard to beat.

I remember going to a place once later in the day and they were all out of them. I was so bummed.

The tamanles are very good, in Venezuela they are called Bollos rellenos, however we also have a food called Hallaca, I hope that someday you can eat it, I know you will like it, if in your city you manage to find a place of typical Venezuelan food, I tell you with all sincerity that you will enjoy it.

Wow, Bollos rellenos and Hallaca sound delicious! 😋 I'd love to try some Venezuelan food one day— it sounds like a wonderful experience. I'll definitely keep an eye out for a local spot that serves authentic Venezuelan dishes, @lanzjoseg. Thank you for suggesting that!

Excellent way to support your church @silversaver888, and get some delicious tamales at the same time....YUM!!!👍😀
I haven't had tamales in such a long time, we need to pick some up next time we go to Costco!
As a kid my mom used to buy these in a glass jar at the store. I'm sure it wasn't the traditional but they were delicious!!👍

It's great, @silvertop! Supporting a good cause and getting delicious tamales is a win-win! 👍😀 Costco tamales sound like a good plan too— can't go wrong with convenience and taste. It's interesting to hear about those tamales in a glass jar from your childhood. Sometimes the non-traditional versions end up being the most memorable! What fillings did they have, or do you remember, @silvertop?

Yum @silversaver888, we don't get Tamales here but I've seen some foodies making it and want to make some myself. Nice to buy something delicious that's also for a good cause 😋

Trying your hand at making tamales at home sounds like it could be a fun and rewarding experience. Now that you mention it, I’ve never attempted to make them myself—I’ll have to give it a go someday, @lizelle.
And you're right, it's always nice when a delicious treat also supports a worthy cause! 😋
Thank you for your comment!

There used to be more than a dozen Mexican food restaurants all over Vancouver, one of my favorites had been a place called Las Margaretta's in Kitsilano district. They are still in business yet they do not appear to have Tamales on the menu.

Really, sis? You've been missing out! Tamales are a traditional Mesoamerican dish made of masa filled with various ingredients like meats, cheese, fruits, vegetables, or chilies, and then steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf. They come in a variety of flavors and styles depending on the region. Ever been curious about trying one? Yet, even here, the restaurants usually don't make it, or if they do, they run out! Best if we learn to do it ourselves! It is kind of like Lo mai gai (糯米雞) which is glutinous rice and chicken filling wrapped in a lotus leaf.

This brings back a great memory of a fella I served with when I first joined the Marines and was serving in Okinawa back in 92-93 time frame. He was Latino and would make tamales for going away parties. They were amazing. Nothing like a good tamale and some beer.

That sounds like an incredible memory, @coinjoe! Sharing food and camaraderie often creates the best experiences. Tamales and beer sound like the perfect combination for a farewell party. It's fantastic how food can bring back such vivid memories and remind us of the special people we've met along the way. 🍻

I research MoiMoi! It is a savory Nigerian dish made from steamed blended beans, often black-eyed peas or brown beans. It's traditionally mixed with ingredients like onions, bell peppers, and spices, then wrapped in leaves (or foil) and steamed until firm. It has a delicious flavor. I'd like to try that someday!
