Wednesday Walk and Orchids

(Edited)

Humans are drawn to orchids because of their breathtaking variety of hues, patterns, and occasionally arousing scents.

Orchid flowers may also be interesting to us because of a special kind of symmetry that is particularly alluring.

orch1.jpg

Though many of the orchid flowers exhibit symmetry in a less striking manner, it's not that other flowers lack symmetry.

orch2.jpg

Like cosmos, zinnias, or sunflowers. There isn't a clear top or bottom when you look at these beautiful blooms head-on because they are all symmetrical.

orch4.jpg

In contrast, orchids have bilateral symmetry, which means that their two halves are mirror images of one another.

orch5.jpg

It is similar to a human face, which has a top, a bottom, and a midline that we can identify.

Orchid blooms can even resemble tiny faces!

Orchids are quite beautiful. I never really appreciated them until I started reading some posts on here from a really great artist. I really like irises too.

You mean @bdmillergallery ! Yes, he is an artist!!! I have three miniature works of his that are watercolor paintings.

I like irises too! They have long and erect flowering stems, similar to ground orchids.

Yeah, I did. I don't think I have joined though because I have a black thumb.

Black thumb, !LOL
I seldom encounter that word... black thumb.

The meaning of BLACK THUMB is a notable inability to make plants grow : a tendency to fail as a gardener; also : a person who has a black thumb.

Definitely the first two for me. I have a really rough time with most plants, even the simplest ones.

Wow, I didn't know there was a community of orchid lovers, I have a large collection of very beautiful orchid photos, my sister grows them, and she really has very beautiful orchids, the times I can visit her I always update my photo album.

The photos you are showing are simply sublime and beautiful.

Soon I will be making a publication with my orchids.

Your orchids are beautiful! They are glorious when they bloom like that. For sure, you will be able to make them bloom again. Not many are successful! It like you and the window where you have it growing.
Much !LUV, sis 🤗🌺❤️

How very cool is that?! I have one orchid at work that grows very well but never blooms. All the ones I've tried raising at home die even though they are in and indoor greenhouse. Someday, when I have time to really devote to them, I may try again and get further into their care.

Thanks for sharing sis! Much love to you!🤗😘😍💜 !LADY !LUV !HBIT

Hmmm... it never blooms? Having too much light or not enough light?
Also, since your orchid is a tropical plant, you may already be aware of its fondness for warm temperatures. A temperature differential is also necessary for orchids to bloom. For two weeks at the beginning of the orchid blooming season, if at all feasible, expose your orchids to nighttime temperatures that are 10 degrees lower than the daytime temps.
Much !LUV sis🤗😘😍

At work, it is always cooler at night as the furnace is set very low. In the summertime, it is always hotter at night. There's no greenhouse. I suspect it might have to do with the environment, but at least at work, it doesn't die like they do at home.

Someday sis......!LUV ya back🤗💜🎃 !INDEED

Did you know that before the last century, orchids were reserved to the wealthy and powerful? In the 1800s, a passion for flower collecting exploded into a frenzy. The frenzy resulted in costs in the hundreds. Collectors eager to showcase unusual species in elaborate private greenhouses hired special hunters to find them in the wild.
Thanks for sharing that detail about your mother, @tattoodjay! She must be a wonderful !LADY.
