Italian explorer Christopher Columbus undertook four transatlantic expeditions from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498, and 1502. Columbus became the first European explorer to uncover the Americas when he accidentally discovered the Bahamas during his 1492 expedition, which was an attempt to find a direct ship route from Europe to Asia. By 1492, millions of indigenous people had inhabited both North and South America. Following Columbus' arrival in the Americas, thousands of European-sponsored transatlantic voyages were undertaken to settle the region and engage in trade, marking the beginning of the Age of Discovery for the Europeans.

Vintage 1992 Discovery of America Quincentenary Jubilee Silver Coin

The US Mint produced a 3 piece set that has a mintage of 950 and commemorates the Quincentenary of Christopher Columbus. The set includes 1/10 oz Gold, 1/10 oz Platinum, and a 1 oz Silver coin. This is the silver coin that was with the set.

The reverse of the silver coin depicts all three of Columbus’ ships – the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria in full sail in an inner circle along with the words “500 DISCOVERY OF AMERICA QUINCENTENARY JUBILEE”, and just below the ships is "500".

In order to carry out a national celebration of Christopher Columbus in 1992, the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Commission was founded in 1984 under the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Act. The commission ran on million in federal seed money and thousands of dollars in private donations and sponsorships from the time it was established until 1993.

More than two hundred Native American delegates from both the United States and Canada convened in 1991 to deliberate and organize an official protest against the Columbus Quincentennial commemorations. Participants were members of the Sioux, Mixtec, Navajo, Hopi, and Shoshone tribes. The main point of contention in this opposition was that, before his arrival in 1492, Native Americans had been residing in America for hundreds of years, and Columbus represented their oppression and persecution. Also, there was the general thought that by providing additional resources, like food and education, to displaced indigenous peoples, the federal government of the United States should be practicing reciprocity.

The first state to rename Columbus Day as Native American Day was South Dakota in 1990. As a direct challenge to the Columbus festival, Berkeley, California was the first city to establish Indigenous Peoples' Day in 1992, the year of the Columbus Quincentennial. Since then, many American cities and villages have observed this event, which serves as evidence against the theory that Christopher Columbus found an uninhabited America. Indigenous People's Day is observed in more than 15 states and the District of Columbia today, either in place of or in addition to Columbus Day.
