The World's First Gold & Silver Banknotes: Jean Laffite and The Pride

I wanted to show this when I have the time to devote to each banknote. But, as circumstances dictate (this is for you @trumpman), I'll feature the first one I grabbed: Laffite and The Pride

This is from The Excelsior Collection, Inc, and this is part of The Saga of Treasure Ships and Pirates, the 1987 23-Karat Gilded Banknote collection from Antigua & Barbuda.

Antigua & Barbuda 23-Karat Gilded Bank Note: Laffite and The Pride

I couldn't help but notice the tremendous detail in Laffite's sip, the Pride. This, like all the other bank notes I have, is in ,999 pure silver, on a shimmering background of 23-karat gold. The details make this collection so outstanding.

Jean Laffite was known as the pirate patriot. He is an American legend for his gallant service alongside Andrew Jackson in saving New Orleans from British invasion during the War of 1812.

Andrew Jackson became an American hero and went on to become the first American President from the frontier West. But there was glory too for Jean Laffite, the pirate who helped save New Orleans. His legend was secure had he then settled down to legitimate trade, he might have led a long and honored life in New Orleans.
BanknoteLaffite2.jpg

He did not! The urge of privateering was too strong!

The story of Jean Laffite's brave service to New Orleans in it's time of crisis is true enough, but Jean Laffite's true loyalty was always to smuggler's gold. In 1821, the pirate hero of New Orleans was killed in action by a British naval sloop on anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Mexico.

This collector album incorporate 30 different banknotes and folio. The stunning collection of artwork that depicts each pirate ship minted on each banknote was commissioned by none other than Alan D'Estrehan, one of the world's foremost marine artists at the time of issue. The captivating stories that accompany each piece of gold & silver artwork were penned by Canadian historian and author, Christopher Moore. Each detailed banknote is struck in solid Pure 23k gold and.999 silver and comes in the official blue leatherette binder and slipcase.

A very stunning collection @silversaver888!🤗
Did I understand that these are 999 fine silver gilded with gold…..?
Can you also purchase a second variation of these in solid 23 karat gold?

No, these ones in this series are all gold-gilded, from what I can see. Perhaps the other series are gold?
But the Gold notes (aurum) are among the smallest verifiable units of gold. However, they are not legal tender. Goldback Gold Notes are types of gold that are acceptable currency within the state, @silvertop !

These are awesome, it's cool how the front and back have
different designs instead of the back have the reverse
design as the front. !LOL

That makes them even more cool. I was thinking about collecting silver certificates at one time, but this beats them all to heck.

I remember the Movie of Captain Laffite, played by Yul Brenner, with hair! And I thought he looked better that way.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️
