The Edge of the Neighborhood

Do you see that brown streak across the horizon?
It's not a storm or smoke.

IT'S CORN, dried and ready for harvest.
That's the end of my neighborhood, right there!
Not marked by fences or signs. Just rows of stalks
that have seen the whole summer pass.

IMG_6732 - Copy (2).JPG

I walked to the corner where the sidewalk ends and the fields begin.
It always felt like a soft boundary.
The houses are behind me, and open land ahead.

IMG_6723a.JPG

Last year, this was planted with tomatoes.
You could smell them from the street,
especially when the sun hit just right.

The fields are full of corn now, all browned out and tall,
making that soft shhh sound like they've got something to say.

IMG_6727 a.JPG

I took a panoramic photo the corner, trying to catch it all.
But the field stretched too far...
left and right, no end in sight.

IMG_6724 - Copy (2).JPG

It's funny how something so ordinary can feel so vast.
Just corn. Just the end of the block.
But standing here, it feels like the beginning of something, too!

Isn't it interesting how the corn has turned brown @silversaver888 !😀
Up here in the northwest even when corn is ready to be harvested it never turns brown.......
In Colorado the corn stocks always were just like yours, it must be something to do with the humidity😊

I always thought they all browned up because they were left to dry in the fields! Hmm...
So, I asked CoPilot:
image.png

It must be because they were sweet corn and harvested earlier. Whereas these are field corn, @silvertop.😊

That’s very interesting information @silversaver888 👍😊
It makes me wonder what type of Corn the dairy farmers are planting up here. You would think it would be field corn to feed the Cows, yet I haven’t seen any brown stalks ever up here!🙄🤔
I asked ChatGPT and this is what AI replied…
Apparently, the corn up here is designed to “Stay Green” by design so very strange !😇😮

Ahh... "stay green"- could this be for animal feeding? The PNW you produce more silage corn. Good to know, @silvertopp!

We have so many dairy farms up here in the Pacific Northwest @silversaver888 I guess that’s the reason they prefer this type of corn!😇

A sure sign pointing towards the end of summer! Fall is just ahead! The corn stalks here don't turn brown like that. Most of the time, the threshing machine chews them up green and spits them into a enclosed wagon to go to the silos. Even after the harvest, the corn that might have been missed, generally won't truly brown out until towards December/January. it's just too moist here I think. I've actually seen it just turn black from mold and mildew!

I miss the dryness. The dried corn looks lovely and hopefully will find it's way to some fall decorations soon.

Thank you for sharing and have a lovely evening sis!🤗💖🌻. !LADY !LUV !HOPE !PIMP

Hmmm... the Pacific Northwest doesn't do "amber waves of grain" but rather green waves! Wow, mold and mildew... the corn goes straight to the spooky season!

It is beyond the spooky season, lol! I like the golden look myself. Right now though, it's still green and there are roadside stands selling corn, corn, corn!

Love ya much sis!🤗💜🌻😍😘🌽🌽🌽 !LOLZ !INDEED !DIY

It's looking like a potential fire hazard if it doesn't get harvested soon. Lot's of dry plants waiting for some errant cigarette or spark to set it ablaze. I do have this thing for fire safety since it was first drummed into my training.

Always, with !LUV 🤗🌺❤️

The fires around my region of BC can sure give the moon an ominous color Sis.
The smoke from the fires have hung around for the last few days, local camp fires are still banned.

Stunning views 💖 It's amazing how you noticed the corn stalks making that subtle sound 💕 It's a great reminder that even the most ordinary scenes can feel vast and full of possibility, especially as the seasons change ✨ Thanks for sharing sis 🤗

LOL, isn't it so! Shhhhh That's how far cornstalks can go! It's quiet here, and when you are intently listening to nature, you can hear the cornstalks as they sway with the wind.
Thank you, sis, @wanderelle!

This corn field images reminds me of a movie my brother used to watch, smallville, like it's a kent farm.

I'll be happy when the get the corn out of the way. Makes it so hard to see the deer in the morning and at night! I don't think ours is quite that brown yet. We have been getting a ton of rain lately and it's like summer is here all over again minus the warm temps.

The farmers are most likely using that to make Silage from the corn. Is there much cattle or livestock in your area also? We get a lot of that in Northern California too 😀

Yes, lots of cattle and livestock in our area. These, I think, are field corn. Don't the harvest them green when it is for silage? I don't know.
