Silver Scarabaeidae

This scarab was hand‑poured for me by @dixiesilverminer. He used to be active on Hive and would usually post his pours with @dixiesilvergirl's help. If you’ve ever seen his work, you know his thing is hand‑poured animals, critters, and skulls. This piece is a good example of why his work always got noticed.

I had this scarab made about six or seven years ago. It used to be bright and shiny when it was new. Over time, the silver has toned in a really nice way. The toning gives it a lot more character now. I like it even more with the age on it.

Scarabs are stout-bodied beetles; most are brown or black in colour, but many, generally species that are diurnally active, have bright metallic colours, measuring between 1.5 and 160 mm (0.059 and 6.3 in). The antennae of most species superficially seem to be knobbed (capitated), but the several segments comprising the head of the antenna are, as a rule, lamellate; they extend laterally into plates called lamellae that they usually keep compressed into a ball. Then, when following a scent, such a beetle fans the lamellae out like leaves to sense odours.

Underneath, it is marked .999 Fine Silver and the maker's stamp DSM.

Why do I have this piece? Honestly, because I’m a silver stacker through and through. I’m a full‑on silver bug, and stuff like this just grabs me. When I see a pour with personality, I want it in my stack. This scarab was one of those pieces I couldn’t pass up.

Anyway, that’s the rundown on this scarab. It’s been with me for years, and the way it’s aged just makes me appreciate it even more. Pieces like this remind me why I stack in the first place. Silver changes, it develops its own look, and it sticks with you.

That’s the kind of thing that keeps me hooked on silver.
