Silver Flamingo

The flamingo is found on five continents in the world, but did you know that the flamingo is a native bird of America?

Yes, it's true. Flamingos were once native to parts of the United States, especially southern Florida.

In fact, during the 1800s, flamingos were commonly seen in Florida. But their numbers dwindled because of hunting and loss of habitat.

Many believed that any flamingos seen in Florida were escapes from captivity!!!

A new study sheds new light on a long-standing controversy by suggesting flamingos are indeed true residents of the Sunshine State.

Here are the other flamingo coins that I have.

This last one is a favorite of mine. It was the very first flamingo coin that I purchased in 2017. Aside from the beautiful flamingo design on the reverse, the obverse has the effigy of Elizabeth II that I love! The engraver for both the obverse and reverse of the coin is Arnold Machin.

The coin is brilliant uncirculated, made of .925 silver, and a crown-sized coin at 40.00 mm in diameter, larger than the other coins that I have depicting flamingos.

I did not know that flamingos were native to the United States. I’ve learned something new today @silversaver888!☺️
I remember that you started collecting flamingos a while back, and the last coin at 40 mm is stunning!👍😊

I research it:

Concepts:
Flamingo migration, Geographical distribution, Wildlife in Canada
Explanation:
Flamingos are not native to Canada and are primarily found in warmer regions. However, there have been rare sightings of flamingos in Canada, often due to unusual weather patterns or migration. The most notable instance was in 2015 when a flamingo was spotted in Ontario, likely a vagrant from the southern United States.

Maybe because it is too cold in Canada.
Thank you, @fat-elvis!

... and it is vintage! It was minted when silver coins were in circulation, and to get at BU is something I treasure! Hmmm... I think I should buy more of this! The only thing is that they may be expensive now!

I suspect they are expensive now! The shiny has gone up in value! That's a good thing overall, but does make it more expensive to add to the stack. Take care sis! Much love to ya!🤗😘😍 !HOPE !INDEED

I didn't know about this bird at all before, it's such a beautiful bird, and here we are seeing that all these designs are quite interesting, and the price of silver may increase again in the future because people are becoming more interested in silver.

For me, personally, interest in precious metals was just a recent development... about 10 years ago. But for some who were knowledgeable about precious metals, their interest started way long ago.
