Revisiting The Gable Mansion

I have shown you a cross-stitch of the Gable Mansion before, and for those who are new to my blog:

image.png

This is the Gable Mansion! It is certainly one of the great homes of the era in the United States, a true gem in the heart of our town.

image.png

I took the photo above more than 6 years ago.
And honestly, not much has changed.

The house has that quiet charm,
like it's watching the world go by with a knowing smile.

IMG_6321 - Copy.JPG

I walk past it often, and even now,
I catch myself slowing down to admire the details...

IMG_6326 - Copy (2).JPG

Those carved wooden brackets, the wraparound porch,
the way the lights hit the upper windows just right in the afternoons.

IMG_6324 - Copy (2).JPG

There is a local legend that the original owners were coin collectors, and somewhere in the attic, there's a hidden stash of Morgan Dollars. No one has ever found it (as far as I know), but I love that kind of mystery. It fits the house... elegant, a little secretive, and full of character.

IMG_6322A.JPG

Anyway, if you are ever at Woodland, go see it! Take a photo, sketch it, stitch it, whatever speaks to you. It's one of those places that wants you to create something.

IMG_6320A.JPG

The home has been designated State Historical Landmark No.864. The house also received the town's Heritage Home award in 1989.

You are right, it is a jewel, architecturally and in how beautiful it is, can you imagine that it is true and that you could find those coins, I am sure you would be extremely happy to have one of those coins, I would be very happy.

The original owners were self-made men (Harvey and Amos), very well-to-do, owned 8,500 acres of farmland, and at different times were Directors on the Bank of Yolo... it is possible, @lanzjoseg !

That's a pretty cool old house! It's funny because a lot of times I drive through small towns in Michigan and there are always one or two that are just massive compared to the other houses in the area. You know it must have been some guy that owned a fur or lumber company back in the day that had them built.

I bet!!! The original owners of this home were farmland owners and bankers. Our downtown area is littered with Victorian homes. There are several mansions in our town. I've featured three of them HERE, and HERE. One owner was also the president of several companies including the Woodland Milling Company, and the other owner of the mansion was a pioneer farmer and ranching enterprise, @bozz

That all sounds about right. I think many of the houses like that we have around here people are still living in them so it's a bit tough to get photos.

During special occasions, houses are open to the public for viewing. And we live in a small town, so if you know the owners of the house, you may be invited for tea sometime.😉

Treasures stashed away in an old house are always intriguing, @tattoodjay! It may be underneath a floorboard, or in a wall, or a post. The thing is, the home remained in the Gable family from when it was built in 1885 to 1973. In 1973, it was bought by Robert L. McWhirk, who for the next 25 years, worked diligently to restore the grand home to its original state till it was bought in 1997. I bet the original walls, nor posts, were never touched/removed/replaced... and floors!

How the rich leave thier mansion as a legacy after they gone, if it is well kept along with some of the mystery that they have. especilly with the rumor of the gold stash hidden somewhere inside the house.

I wonder if the current owners have tried to look for it? Maybe when technology allows us to see through walls, posts, and floors... will they find it, @ekavieka !

This style of house is typical of some cities in the United States. A while back, a colleague posted a video and the street had several houses similar to these. When you mentioned the mysteries, I got excited. Have you ever stopped to imagine that this coin mystery could happen in your own home? Let's say you keep your relics under lock and key. One day, in history, they will be a treasure to be found.

About 10 years ago, a family found a box buried in a Brazilian house, full of money. There was momentary joy and sadness when they discovered it was worthless.

These things happen more often than we imagine; people tend to keep their treasures hidden and keep them to themselves.

A great place that a nation must be proud off, one of a kind mansion and it was a great thing this was preserved and maintained.
