Gratin Dauphinois on Sublime Sunday

Today I made Gratin Dauphinois, which is one of the traditional French classic dish. I wish I had made three times the recipe. I didn't realize that my guests would like it that much. Needless to say, I was very good!

What is it made of?

Potatoes!

Gratin Dauphinois is a simple and decadent potato dish that is rich and creamy.

To make Gratin Dauphinois:

Measure out the 1 cup heavy cream and 1/2 cup milk into a sauce pot. Add 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir to make sure that everything gets mixed together.

Cover the pot and simmer the cream for about 10 minutes.

Peel all the potatoes. Use a knife to slice the potatoes thinly, then add to the pot. I used a mandoline and sliced it directly into the pot.

Stir the potatoes, the cover the pot for another 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to avoid the potatoes sticking to the pot.

Rub the inside of the baking pan with garlic and butter the pan. Transfer the potatoes in the pan, and dab it with butter. Shred 1/3 cup Gruyere Cheese on top of the potatoes.

Cover the pan with aluminum foil with holes to allow the steam to escape the bake the Gratin Dauphinois.

Bake the Gratin Dauphinois in a preheated 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 30 minutes until the cheese turns golden.

As soon as I read French recipe and the word creamy, I loved the idea, and as I read the ingredients and method, I liked it even more. It must be delicious, creamy, fluffy and a delight for the palate.

I imagine it would go well with some kind of roast meat, as a perfect accompaniment, or it would also be very good on its own. Definitely a recipe I will try. Thank you very much! My family will love it!

Gratin Dauphinois is more than a dish. It is an invitation to enjoy life's small pleasures, those that are cooked slowly and savored with joy and gratitude, @avdesing. This dish took 20 minutes to simmer in the cream, one hour to cook in the oven, and 15 minutes to prep. I usually make it with Coq au Vin and the recipe is HERE.

Usually potatoes are made spicy here in our country India, for rice or bread, especially as a side dish. But this definitely looks as a one whole meal. Nice to learn something new. Thanks 😊

Because it was a new dish that I served to this group of guests, they took little at the beginning, until I noticed that ALL of them took seconds and thirds until it was gone. I wish I had tripled the dish!

I tried something similar, there is a dish very similar to this one here in Brazil, I don't remember the name at the moment, but it doesn't use nutmeg, they make it with fillings, I don't know if it's really the same thing, but it's extremely delicious.

Another recipe for my wife's list.
