EC8 Silver Coin: 2021 St Lucia

avatar
(Edited)

Another EC8 coin is from St Lucia. St Lucia is an island country of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean.

The following has been written as it's etymology:
"Saint Lucia was named after Saint Lucy of Syracuse (AD 283 – 304). Saint Lucia and Ireland are the only two sovereign states in the world named after a woman (Ireland is named after the Celtic goddess of fertility Eire) and Saint Lucia is the only one named after a human woman. Legend states that French sailors were shipwrecked on the island on 13 December, the feast day of St. Lucy, and therefore named the island in her honour. A globe in the Vatican from 1520 shows the island as Sancta Lucia, indicating that the island was instead named by early Spanish explorers." Source

François Le Clerc, a pirate known as Jambe de Bois due to his wooden leg. Peg-Leg In the 1550s, Le Clerc utilized the island to ambush Spanish ships, and it is today a national landmark with historic structures and museums to entice visitors.

The Caribs inhabited Saint Lucia until the 1600s. Even during the age of colonialism, the Caribs fought and thwarted numerous attempts by the English and French to settle on the island.

In the 1600s, the French, English, and Dutch all attempted to establish colonies on Saint Lucia. In 1651, French West India Company purchased the territory from the Caribs in order to establish a French colony. The English responded by sending 1,000 men to reclaim the island. Fighting raged on until 1814, when the French surrendered Saint Lucia to the English.

Saint Lucia is now one of Europe's last colonies to declare freedom. She only gained independence from the British Commonwealth in 1979, and she now has a prosperous, peaceful economy and a sovereign government.

The St Lucia coins are created and marketed by Scottsdale Mint and ae legal tender in St Lucia, as the other member countries of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank.

We'll drop anchor at each EC8 Island to look for the elusive black flamingo. If we can't find it at St. Lucia then we'll do some shopping, take in some of the sights, dig for treasure, and weight anchor to the next Island and do the same. I'll have lots of suntan lotion.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

St Lucia has flamingos! Remember this:

But it isn't black, but pink! I guess we'll do some shopping then, and proceed to St. Kits!
What fun!!!

Black is different and sounds more magical, mysterious and unique.
This totally made up sea myth is a pretext for lady pirates a shallow excuse to go do some window shopping 😉 "No black flamingo here in the shoe shop, tarry on the next shop."

I have a bunch but stopped buying them. I have enough series. I’m trying to condense not expand.

Very interesting sis! I like the coin, but am curious; what is the flower that is on the reverse side? To me, it looks like an artichoke.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing; much love to you!🤗😘💕💐 !LADY !LUV

The reverse features a Etlingera elatior flower, also known as a torch ginger lily, representing the St. Lucia Botanical Gardens. I didn't realize that Scottsdale Mint used a generic description of all their coins, hehehe! Thanks for asking.
