2024 Tuvalu Silver Black Flag: The Kingston

It took an eternity for this coin to become available! It was only released to dealers this January for the general public to purchase. I had to preorder it last year.

2024TuvaluBlackFlag1.JPG

I finally got my hands on it a few days ago— what a relief! These coins are incredibly tough to get hold of when they're first released!

2024TuvaluBlackFlag2.JPG

2024 Tuvalu Silver Black Flag: The Kingston

It is the Kingston.

No, not Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, and the home to the Bob Marley Museum and the famous Port Royal (but related). Nor is it Kingston, Ontario, Canada, that houses the prestigious Queen's University and the Royal Military College. It is not Kingston upon Thames, United Kingdom, a suburban area of Greater London with a rich history and many cultural attractions; or is it Kingston, New York, USA- a city known for its historic architecture and vibrant arts scene that played a significant role during the American Revolution.

But Kingston, a merchant ship!

2024TuvaluBlackFlag3.JPG

Coin Highlights:

  • Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine silver.
  • Limited mintage of only 15,000 coins worldwide.
  • Packaged in a protective plastic capsule.
  • Obverse: Showcases the Jody Clark effigy of Charles III, the monetary denomination, the coin’s weight and fineness, and the 2024 year-date.
  • Reverse: A representation of the Kingston, a merchant ship carrying valuable cargo, which was captured by John "Calico Jack" Rackham and crew. Calico Jack was known for having female pirates in his crew, including his lover, Anne Bonny. The pair sailed and pillaged their way through the Caribbean. The Kingston is shown ominously creeping towards the tropical coastline as the Jolly Roger flag ripples in the wind overhead. The motif of a skull is formed in the horizon. The design also features the words "THE KINGSTON," "BLACK FLAG: CALICO JACK & ANNE BONNY," the weight, fineness, and The ---Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark.
  • Sovereign coin backed by Tuvalu government.
    Source

John Rackham—better known as Calico Jack— was an English pirate captain hanging around the Bahamas and Cuba in the early 1700s. He got his nickname from the calico clothes he loved to wear, and 'Jack' is just short for 'John'. He's famous for having two fearless female crew members: Mary Read and Anne Bonny, who was also his lover.

2024TuvaluBlackFlag4.JPG

After becoming captain, Rackham focused on raiding small vessels close to shore. He and his crew captured the Kingston, a small Jamaican ship, and made it their flagship. They achieved several victories in the West Indies, even capturing a couple of large ships off Bermuda.

See, I thought sure it was referencing the bustling metropolis of Kingston, MI population 395. It's a very nice piece. Well worth the wait!

Now, that'd be quite the bustling metropolis for sure, considering Kingston, MI's population of 395! 😄
Thank you, @bozz! I'm really pleased with that silver ship coin. It was definitely worth the wait. There's something special about ship coins that feels like holding a piece of history and adventure.

I'm glad you like the look of these coins! Starting a coin collection is such an exciting journey.😊 A good place to start is deciding on a theme or type of coin you’re most interested in – for example, ship coins, historical coins, or even those with unique designs. From there, you can do some research on reputable dealers or coin shops.
Now, if you are thinking of stacking silver (or gold) that's another animal altogether (but with some similarities).

I think its the worry of coming across a not so reputable dealer that is my problem, i do like the idea of collecting along a theme though.

I hear you, @doombot75! Navigating the world of collecting can definitely be daunting, especially with concerns about reputable dealers. One thing that can help is starting with well-known and trusted platforms or dealers to build confidence in your purchases. When it comes to collecting along a theme, it really does add a special touch to your collection, making it more cohesive and rewarding. What's a theme you are interested in?

I had seen a few silver coins at a recent visit to an antique dealer, I was drawn to a few with Pandas on but I’m not sure that would lead to a large collection, but I would probably look towards animals of some description as a starter

Those panda coins sound adorable! 🐼 Starting a collection with animal-themed coins is a fantastic idea. There are so many interesting and beautifully designed coins out there featuring all kinds of creatures. Start with the animal/s you are most drawn to, and you cannot go wrong! I love animals too!!!

How's "Jack" short for "John"?😂😂

0

avatar

!LOL... like how is Jack Kennedy a nickname for John F Kennedy?
"Jack" as a nickname for "John" is indeed an interesting one that has historical roots. This nickname dates back to the Middle Ages when "John" was a very common name. Over time, diminutives and variations of names became popular, and "Jackin" was a common diminutive for "John." Eventually, "Jackin" was shortened to "Jack."
Interestingly, "Jackin" or "Jankin" were both pet forms of "John," and in Middle English, adding the suffix "-kin" was a common way to create diminutives. It's a bit like calling someone named "Robert," "Robbie." Over time, this evolved into "Jack," and that's how we ended up with "Jack" as a nickname for "John."

There seems to be a growing interest in ship-themed coins, and they do have a certain charm, don’t they, @trautenberk? 🚢 They were always around, but now people are beginning to notice and appreciate the artistry more. I agree, these coins are definitely worth adding to any collection.

The short answer is no.

The long answer, not yet. None of my Online retailers currently stock these, nor any, indicate anticipating as stock in the short term including the one that has almost carried the entire series so far. With Retail seeing a net inflow of silver back into these shops cast doubt of any of them intend to stock the Kingston.
I've been already anticipating this coming to market ad have an IG follow the very artist that designed this series.
I took it upon myself to ask my friend over in NY to order a pair for me. I owe him two 💋 and $78USD plus what else I order through him.

What a beautiful coin! It reminds me of a time when I stumbled upon my parents' collection. Turns out, they had some old coins and vintage currency too. It might be fun to share them in a post someday. By the way, are there any specific guidelines for posting about coins in the SSG community? Just in case I decide to show off my newfound treasure! 😊
