2024 British Silver Britannia Coin

With only one monarch depicted on the coin's obverse, the British Silver Britannia, which was first released in 1997, was circulated for over 26 years. After Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022, the Royal Mint released 2023 Britannia, featuring Charles III on the obverse and Her Late Majesty on the obverse. The 2024 series is the first to exclusively include coins featuring Charles III on the front.

2024 British Silver Britannia Coin

Philip Nathan's portrayal of Britannia is still featured on the reverse of 2024 British Silver Britannias from the mint. With a Corinthian helmet on her head, a trident in her right hand, and a Union Jack shield on her left, she is portrayed as a strong female metaphor looking to her right in front-facing relief.

Coin Highlights:

Coins arrive inside plastic flips, acrylic tubes of 25 coins, or mint-sealed Monster Boxes of 500 coins.
28th date in the British Silver Britannia Series.
Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in BU condition.
Issued a face value of 2 Pound sterling (GBP) by Britain.
King Charles III on the obverse.
Britannia on the reverse.
Security features in the reverse design.

Now, the obverse of 2024 1 oz Silver Britannia Coins portrays Charles III. Martin Jennings created this one in late 2022, and it made its premiere halfway through the 2023 production season. This new bust of Charles III is uncrowned and in left-profile relief.

As you can see, the coin has milk spots, which were not visible before I took the photo. It's a shame!

Milk spots are those obnoxious, thin, white marks that arise on reflective silver coins caused by the annealing process. When a coin is manufactured, one of the final processes that it goes through is annealing, a system of baking and cooling the coin in order to prevent the silver from becoming brittle. Unfortunately, during this process borax can be left behind on the surface of the coin and end up baked into it. Milk spots do not reduce the value of your coin, but they can have a negative impact on the premium over spot price. Aside from that, they reduce the visual appeal of the coin, which on beautiful releases such as the Canadian Maple Leaf or the Austrian Philharmonic, is a definite blow for collectors.

MILK SPOT MYTHS:
Milk spots are caused by overhandling of your coin
They are scuff marks or scratches resulting from improper storage or packaging.
Milk spots are similar to tarnish and are caused via air exposure
They can be removed by scrubbing, scraping, or scouring your coin
They will grow and change if left alone

For years, collectors were confused and frustrated by milk spots on their carefully cared for and beloved coins. It was unclear how or why they showed up on valuable, otherwise spotless coins. This confusion led to the rise of certain myths, like that milk spots were caused by handling, scratching, or air exposure. Even only ten years ago, it was said that there was nothing to be done for the spots without causing irreversible damage, and many numismatists were left with these unsightly spots on their precious investments.

They are pretty inexpensive! I think that the ASE, Maples, Britannia, and Krugerrand are good to accumulate.

Pretty coin ! I wonder if Charles III coins will become collectable in future due to scarcity. Let's face it, with his age and recent health issues, he's not likely to match the length of reign of his mother, so we may only have a few years' worth of coins with his picture on them.

I bet they will! But then again, he has his effigy on many (countries in the Commonwealth) coins.

As a teenage coin collector, I have no idea what caused milk spots @silversaver888 ......
At one point I assumed it was how I was storing them, too much humidity... Etc...🙄
A very beautiful 2024 Britannia featuring Charles III !😀👍

So far, my Canadian coins, and now this Britannia coin, have developed milk spots! Like @silverd510 say, it is still silver. Oh well!

A great action pose of the Britannia allegory.
Milk spots, too bad, it's hit or miss getting a milk spot free Britannia. I seemed to have my share of spotty coins.
