2023 U.S. Trade Dollar Silver Coin

The trade dollars were first introduced in the late 15th century. The Coinage Act of 1873 included the U.S. trade dollar, which was first introduced as a result of increased trade between the United States and China in the late 1860s. The main purpose of U.S. trade dollars was trading with Asian nations, but they were also accepted as legal cash in the country for amounts up to $5, and many of them were returned to the domestic market. But when mining in the United States increased, the price of silver quickly fell below the coin's face value. The U.S. trade dollar started to lose favor with many banks and companies. This ultimately resulted in the U.S. trade dollar's legal tender status being revoked.

2023 St. Helena US Trade Dollar Silver Coin (BU)

The East India Company's modern trade dollar series has been one of the most well-liked silver coin collections. The original trade dollar designs from countries including France, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Japan were first depicted in these silver bullion coins.

Coin Highlights:

  • Available inside protective flips.
  • 4th release of Modern Trade Dollar Silver Coins.
  • Limited mintage of only 5,000 coins.
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in BU condition.
  • The face value of One Pound is fully backed by the Issuing Authority of St. Helena.
  • On the obverse is an all-new effigy of King Charles III.
  • The reverse features a modern image of Lady Liberty.
  • Designed by Chiara Principe.

The bust of Charles III can be found on the obverse. It was created exclusively for the East India Company and the St. Helena Issuing Authority and shares similarities with the Royal Mint's design with the absence of a crown on the head.

Lady Liberty in a contemporary pose is on the reverse. Wavy hair cascades down the back of her head and over her shoulder, drawing attention to the eagle that soars in front of her, making her figure the focal point of the foreground. Wearing a crown of stars, she carries a candle in her right hand. The United States outline is visible in the background.

The United States Trade dollar was minted from 1873-1885.

The trade dollars weighed 420 grains as depicted on the reverse. This weight was slightly larger than the standard silver dollar at the time weighing 412.5 grains.
The obverse depicts lady liberty sitting on a bale holding out a branch in her right hand and a ribbon inscribed with the word "LIBERTY" in her left. The sea in the front and a bundle of wheat behind, "IN GOD WE TRUST" inscribed below and stars above.
The reverse depicts and eagle holding arrows and a branch, below lists the weight and purity "420 GRAINS, 900 FINE", "E PLURBUS UNUM" is Inscribed in the ribbon above, and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "TRADE DOLLAR" surrounding.

An interesting update to the original American Trade Dollar, plenty of history and events have since passed between these two. The extra 8 grains of silver premium were to coax the Chinese into trading more favorably with the USA over the other trade dollars already circulating.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️
