1999 UK Elizabeth II 1 Pound Scottish Lion Silver Proof

The One Pound coin was introduced by the Royal Mint in 1983.

History
By the 1980’s, the spending power of one pound in the UK had diminished sufficiently for the Government to decide that a pound coin was more suitable than a pound note. Coins last more than 50 times as long as banknotes and a one pound note that only lasts (on average) 9 months was cost inefficient.
It was decided to launch a one-pound coin on 21 April 1983. The coin replaced the Bank of England one pound banknote, which had been around in various forms since 1797. The one pound note ceased production at the end of 1984 and was removed from circulation on 11 March 1988, though still redeemable at the Bank’s offices, like all English banknotes.

There were different designs used for the reverse on the original £1 coin; the designs for the UK- Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England, alternated each year.
The £1 coins dated 1999 features on the reverse, the rampant lion as an emblem of Scotland. It is the same reverse as the 1994 One Pound coin.

The obverse depicts the fourth crowned portrait of Elizabeth II.

The edge of the coin is incused with Latin wording NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT, which is translated in English as "No one provokes me with impunity."

Powerful words!

There is a saying that goes:

Always
appreciate
what you have
before it's
gone

It's funny that I find myself looking for old coins that have Elizabeth II on them. Realizing how long she reigned was a monarch is quite mind-boggling!

That's a very pretty coin! Great part of your stack @silversaver888 ! Here we need to replace the $1 bill with a coin, it just makes sense, currency wears out way to fast. Maybe even something like a $3 coin might make sense too for practicality. At least the penny has met it's end and I think the nickel is next. Great post!

It makes sense to replace dollar bills, @thebighigg. And The Mint need to make our dollar coins a little bigger... they are the size of a quarter (or a bit bigger)!

An uncirculated old pound. I forget what year this is. The Canadian $1 dollar note started winding down circulation after 1986 to the brass coin we have now, a Loonie.
20210614_002759.jpg
The Bank of Canada made that same choice under the same reason.

Always, with !LUV 🤗🌺❤️

Why don't we stop using the $1 bill and make our $1 coin bigger than what it is, @silvertop?

Ms. Saver @silversaver888

Cinco de Mayo

If In-N-Out weren’t privately owned, the company would differ significantly from what it is now. Bible verses would likely disappear from the bottom of their cups, prices would rise due to corporate profit motives, and quality control would decline. In-N-Out's CEO has stated multiple times that she would never sell the company.

Queen Elizabeth II did indeed reign for quite the impressive time frame! I still have trouble seeing Charles as the correct bust on today's coins. It just seems wrong to me for some reason. Thank you for sharing the lovely coin. Take care my sweet sis and have a lovely evening! Much !LUV to you!🤗💜🌹😘😍 !LADY !HOPE

  • Did you know that honey contains a substance that helps the human brain work better?
  • Did you know that honey is the ONLY food on earth that can sustain human life alone?
