1987 Canada Silver Dollar Proof: 400th Anniversary of Davis Exploration

I ordered a coin from Apmex, and got something better!

IMG_6375 - Copy.JPG

There is a mistake in my order. I thought I was buying a 1991 silver dollar.

IMG_6376.JPG

But I got something better because the coin was older! Not by many years, but 5 years older.

IMG_6377 - Copy.JPG

This silver coin was minted in 1987 by the Royal Canadian Mint of Ottawa to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Davis' Arctic explorations... the Baffin Island, the Davis Strait, and the Gulf of Cumberland.

IMG_6379 - Copy.JPG

Holding the coin, I imagined the cold winds Davis must have faced. And the creaking wooden hulls against frozen waters. The chill enters my thoughts... brrrr, indeed!

Ahhh... what courage it must take to chase the unknown with grit and determination!!!

Even though the silver content is only .500, I don't really mind. I learn much from commemorative coins... about history, design, symbolism, and the stories behind coins such as this one. It makes this piece more valuable to me than the silver content.

Coins do inspire me to visit places. But it didn't make me think of going to Baffin Island! I would like to visit Canada again!
Thanks for asking, @oadissin !

The stories, the designs, the history behind commemorative coins, makes them very collectible @silversaver888 !👍🤗
.500 percent Silver….. that’s very interesting, I wonder why they dropped the silver content on this commemorative?
Is that percentage silver common for Canadian commemoratives?

Why .500 Silver? The shift to 50% silver in some Canadian coins traces back to 1968, when rising silver prices made it economically unsustainable to continue minting coins with higher silver content. Prior to that, Canadian coins had been minted with 92.5% silver (up to 1919), then 80% silver (from 1920 to 1967). But by the late '60s, the cost of silver outpaced the face value of the coins, prompting the Royal Canadian Mint to reduce the silver content to .500 for a brief period before switching entirely to nickel or copper-nickel for circulation (Accdg to Apmex and SeatleGold)
Is .500 Silver Common for Commemoratives? Not typically. Most modern commemorative Canadian coins—especially those minted for collectors—are made with .9999 fine silver. The .500 silver content is more of a transitional relic from the late 1960s, when Canada was phasing out silver in circulating coins. So if you’ve got a commemorative with .500 silver, it’s likely from that unique window in history, making it a bit of a numismatic time capsule. And I've got one, yay!

Interesting coin; awesome ship on it! The video was informative as well. I guess generally, I've not paid attention to land masses towards the Arctic Circle or for Antarctica either, for that matter. Thanks for sharing sis; I learned something today! Take care! !LUV ya much!🤗🌻💖😘😍 !LADY !HBIT !LOLZ

Other than the Vikings, John Davis put him and his ship on the forefront in search the theorized short cut to the far east. He blazed the trail for the Northwest passage and was lucky to survive the journey considering how ill prepared they were. If he or any of his ships became trapped by the ice it'd be game over.

Luck didn't help the Franklin expedition 200 years later better equipped and suitable hulls. If only a couple of teams of enchanted Husky Yorkies magically appeared and rescued Franklin's crews and fly them out a great magic dogsled back to England.

Always, with !LUV 🤗🌺❤️

This coin clearly highlights the caravel used in the past. The details transport us back in time, imagining this marvel sailing the seas. Some countries like to highlight ships and caravels as symbols, a time that will never return but will be recorded in history. !BEER
