1979 Tuvalu $10 Brigantine 'Rebecca' Silver

The 1979 Tuvalu 10 Dollars coin is a commemorative coin issued to mark the first anniversary of Tuvalu's independence.

It's a beautiful piece of numismatic history, especially for collectors and stackers interested in coins from small island nations.

1979Tuvalu1.JPG

Composition: The coin is made of silver with a fineness of 0.500.
Weight: It weighs 35 grams.
Diameter: The coin has a diameter of 42 mm.
Design: The obverse features the effigy of Elizabeth II. The reverse depicts a brigantine named "Rebecca".
Mintage: Only 5,000 coins were minted.
Value: The coin's value can vary depending on its condition, but it generally holds a bullion value around USD 17.34 based on the price of silver.

Now, the coin market price is so much more than that, especially a specimen that is BU.

The brigantine "Rebecca" has an interesting history! Originally a two-masted sailing vessel, the Rebecca was involved in the West India trade in the 18th century. One notable event in its history occurred in 1722, when it was captured by the notorious pirate Edward Low and his crew. This capture led to a series of violent events along the Atlantic coast.

The Rebecca's story has been depicted in various forms, including a gold pirate banknote issued by the government of Antigua. This banknote is part of a series called the "Saga of Treasure Ships & Pirates," which features other famous pirate ships like Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge and Captain Kidd's Adventure Galley.

I previously shown some of the gold pirate bank notes on Antigua HERE.

The finish of this coin is prooflike. Prooflike coins are regular circulation coins that happen to have a super shiny surface, kind of like proof coins, but they aren’t made with the same special process. They look brilliant because of their mirror-like surfaces. These coins are struck using standard dies without any special treatment during the minting process.

Prooflike coins are graded based on their reflectivity, and they must show clear reflectivity at a distance of two to four inches. They can be labeled as PL (Prooflike) or DMPL (Deep Mirror Prooflike), with the latter having even deeper reflectivity.

1979Tuvalu1.JPG

The big difference between proof and prooflike coins is how they’re made. Proof coins get a lot of extra attention with polished planchets and specially prepared dies. They’re struck multiple times and handled with care. Prooflike coins, on the other hand, are just regular circulation coins that naturally end up with that shiny surface because of the quality of the planchet and the dies used.

Prooflike coins can be pretty rare and are sought after by collectors because of their striking appearance. It’s like having the best of both worlds—the craftsmanship of proof coins and the accessibility of regular circulation coins.

Pirates prefer the speed and maneuverability of a Brigantine or a schooner, a Brig would be a little bigger with slightly more fire power. While a frigate or galleon may have plenty of fire power most time they are too slow to catch a Brig.
"No Prey, no Pay!" ☠️

As always, with !LUV and dubloons 🤗🌺❤️

Ahoy, matey! Ye be speakin' the truth of the high seas. Aye, the pirates do fancy their Brigantines and schooners for their speed and agility. A Brig's got a bit more muscle with its firepower, but still nimble enough to outmaneuver those slow, lumbering galleons and frigates.

The pirate's life is all about the chase—no use havin' all that firepower if ye can't catch your prey. And as the saying goes, "No prey, no pay!" ☠️

Fair winds and following seas to ye, with a hearty !LUV and plenty of dubloons! 🏴‍☠️

A silver coin with 2D engraving, a classic.
Simple, but effective. A piece of craftsmanship on a pirate ship is the best of the best.
