1943 Mexico Silver Un Peso
I picked up another Mexico Un Peso, this time it is from 1943.
The peso was originally the name of the eight-real coins issued in Mexico by Spain. These were the so-called Spanish dollars or pieces of eight in wide circulation in the Americas and Asia from the height of the Spanish Empire until the early 19th century.
After Mexico gained its independence in 1821, the new government continued the Spanish monetary system of 16 silver reales = 1 gold escudo, with the peso of 8 reales the largest silver coin. They have also issued paper money, denominated in pes.
In 1863, the first issue was made of coins denominated in centavos, worth one hundredth of the peso. This was followed in 1866 by coins denominated “one peso”. Coins denominated in reales continued to be issued until 1897. In 1905, the gold content of the peso was reduced by 49.3% but the silver content of the peso remained initially unchanged (subsidiary coins were debased). However, from 1918 onward, the weight and fineness of all the silver coins declined, until 1977, when the last silver 100-peso coins were minted. 1

1943 Mexico Silver Un Peso
I got this from Ebay and it was advertised as 1943 Mexico Silver Un Peso Coin BU MS Uncirculated GEM World Silver Dollar Size.
It was priced reasonably, so I bought it.
This is the reverse of the coin, with the radiant cap, the denomination of Un Peso, the date, and a wreath.
The edges are plain with incuse lettering in Latin: INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD, which is translated in English as Independence and Liberty.
The obverse depicts the Mexican coat of arms: a Mexican golden eagle perched on a pear cactus devouring a rattlesnake. The purity 0.720 and "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS" are also engraved.
As soon as I received it, I immediately did a Ping Test.

I have two Mexican pesos from the sixties. I think the silver in them is not much. The pinger sounds interesting, I actually drop coins on a tiled floor and I can tell if that coin has silver in it. I have been collecting coins for about fifty years so you do learn something. Unfortunately, I should have thousands of coins, but have given most of them away.
Dropping the coins on a tiled floor is one way, !LOL. I am sure the silver coins you've given away have been put to good use or are being collected by someone.
If they are from the 60's then the coins are 10% silver.
For the most part, I buy non-circulating coins of .999 fine silver. I am not a numismatist, and I just buy them when I can.

I almost pulled the trigger on another Colonial Mexican 8 Reals with a delightful set of chop marks. I had to back off, these were getting into a different strain of Stackitis. That reminds me of a local restaurant that serves both Mexican and Chinese food.
