Regarded as a transition currency, the Mexico Un Peso was circulated in tandem with the 8 Real denomination and finally took its place, maintaining the same size, design, and silver content.

The Un Peso coin was minted by Casa de Moneda de Culiacán, Mexico.

After the 1905 Monetary Reform, only Mexico City's satellite mints continued to operate.

This is a brief summary of the history of the Culiacán Mint, which opened its doors in 1846 and closed on May 31, 1905. It is in Spanish.

As always, the 1898 Un Peso underwent a ping test!

Another beauty! That is nice! I love Mexican silver, but you already know that. Great pickup! Did you find that on your cruise?

I wish I did. It is a really pretty coin, and seldom do you come across a very old Mexico coin at 90% (that is not expensive). That is why I settle for modern coins... the cost. But this one was reasonable.

They are tough to find in nice condition. I'm always looking around for them because on occasion I find one for cheap. Very rarely these days though!

Yes, they are fun! Bit not knowing much about them... I feel insecure buying the older silver coins. Not the gold though. Now, why is that??? !LOL

I think it quite cool to have a few of the old circulating silver coins. I have an 1895 8 Reales version before the change from that of a Colonial coin to that of the Mexican Republic, same pattern, different type. A piece of history that has me appreciate the long history of the Mexican mint.

Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

The oldest mint in the Americas - producer of the Libertad coins

The Mexican Mint ("La Casa de Moneda de México") is the official mint of the Republic of Mexico. It is the oldest mint on the American continents and produces the country's circulation and commemorative coins for the Bank of Mexico as well as various medals. The Mexican Mint produced various gold bullion coins throughout its history like the Mexican Centenario, Azteca and Hidalgo gold coins. Nowadays, it is the Mexican Libertad coins out of gold and silver that the mint is known for among bullion investors worldwide. The mint's ancient headquarter in Mexico City is nowadays a museum. All the coin production takes place at state-of-the-art facilities in San Luis Potosí.

It definitely is not the oldest, but old nonetheless. Someday, I will be able to afford another Reale. I have one, I think, do I have one. I have to check it out, I seem to recall that I bought one in 2017 and showed it to you. Hmmm... I don't recall now, !LOL

Ah, yes the infamous and highly sought after 8 Reales make a cameo here.
I've actually never seen this peso before. At least I think... But that classic radiant cap is familiar! Is it also on some other coins?
This eagle is nice but my favorite reverse design is the "Porfirian" eagle of later decades.

Yes, the radiant cap is in other coins as well. I collect 1888 coins, and the 1888 Mexican coins had it in all denominations.
I had to look up "Porfirian".

Porfiriato, the period of Porfirio Díaz’s presidency of Mexico (1876–80; 1884–1911), an era of dictatorial rule accomplished through a combination of consensus and repression during which the country underwent extensive modernization but political liberties were limited and the free press was muzzled.

Which eagle was that?

Very similar to your eagle but this one specifically is 2D. The design disappears entirely around the end of his reign of terror as well. In 1905, the monetary reform also changed 'The Republic of Mexico' to 'United States of Mexico' on coinage.
