A nontraditional commute

Interisland Commute

  • I live in a place which is actually a chain of islands in the ocean. And I travel from the most populated island to a less populated island because they have a shortage of of skilled personnel. This means I fly from one island to another and then drive to my place of work.
  • I think some people who know me think it's crazy to commute so far on a regular basis, but I think they don't have a complete picture of what I do, so they don't appreciate it.

Air Travel: I fly.

  • While it is true that I get up early 4:30 AM to travel to the airport, where I wait 45 minutes to go through airport security and then wait to board my plane, I love to fly so it's a treat.
  • And while I fly interislands early in the morning I am able to see the most beautiful sunrises, as the sun rises over the equator. It is just so different to see a sunrise at 20,000 feet in the air, literally above the clouds. Not to mention the clouds at this height are spectacular.
  • At the airports I have become quite gregarious and engage people in conversation to find out where they are from and ask them about life where they are from. Engaging people in conversation about themselves is amazingly interesting and humans love to talk about things they are interested in, so their country, their food, language and history are great conversation starters.
  • I have met people from different countries and continents which I may never thought of travelling to, but after meeting someone from there I am quite intrigued to travel there.

Drive

  • Then I get to drive 45 minutes to work from the airport after doing some grocery shopping. I know some might think that's crazy, a 45 minute drive, after a 45 minute flight. But it is fun and interesting.
  • The road is through a beautifully diverse environment, mountains, dessert, rain forests and rolling plains.
  • The drive is relaxing and rejuvenating. I listen to podcasts, music or just think. I think the most amazing advantage of this peaceful commute is the me time, as in time I have just with myself, my thoughts, my goals and my ideas for achieving them .

Next the cars.

  • I also rent a car frequently, and this gives me a chance to try out diferent makes and models.
  • I know some might find this annoying to learn to drive and operate a different vehicle. Every car manufacturer does something like the other companies, but they also have things they do differently. This little challange to learn how this car is different from the last is intersting. It makes you think whay did they do it that way. Why is that control there?
  • It turns out that learning how to opearte a different car every so often is actually fun and stimulates your brain to learn and figure things out faster.

Hotels

  • I frequently stay in hotels, so I make it a point to stay somewhere I haven't stayed, which has been fun and interesting. Some places look like palaces in their brochure, but turn out to be a bit ordinary. Others look very plain and turn out to be spectacular. I also found that hotel staff are often treated badly by guests are not even acknowledged with a good morning or hello. SO I make it a point to be extra cheery and acknowledge every one. Even people who don't speak my language fluently understand a smile and pleasant tone of voice, and greet me with a smile in return.
  • I also have the advantage of being able to work 4 shifts in one weekend, as I am allowed sometimes to work back to back 8 hours shifts. So it's almost like a second fulltime job.
  • I also travel and stay for two days, which means the commute averages closer to a regualr 45 ninutes to work and 45 minutes home we experience on my island due to heavy traffic.

The people

  • I also enjoy working with outer island people.
  • They are very friendly and very grateful that I fly to their island to help them.
  • The rewards of gratitude and appreciation they bestow on me really nourish my soul and my spirit.
  • Lastly working with people who are less fortunate them me in some ways, but richer them me in other ways helps me see life more clearly.
  • They have helped me adapt an Attitude of Gratitude.
  • In general I think this job has allowed me to see places and people I would not have otherwise seen, and it nourishes my curiousity, my spirit and in some ways my soul.

Do you mind if I take rewards away since it was an error? Just trying to be fair.

I've had a non-traditional commute once or twice and it is interesting! It sounds like yours is a little challenging but it gives you good life experiences so that's a plus to it. It can be tiring though I'm sure!
