I Spent $100 on a Dress. Was it worth it?

A pair of glistening Bulgari. They took two steps towards me and instantly became my undoing.

Besides the fact that the rich fragrance of gulf orchid permeated the air immediately he walked in, making it almost impossible to ignore him, he was dressed and built like a Greek god.

I'm not one to fall for appearances, but this guy's appearance made a statement that resounded in my brain forever.

Or at least, I thought it'd last forever.

“Kirsten, focus!” Sharon whispered in my ears. We usually didn't pay attention to our clients, instead we paid attention to their needs, listened to their endless complaints and tried to sort them out.

This one however, got me to betray my code of conduct for the first time in my life.

“Miss….” He pushed his Montblanc glasses slightly to get a good view of my name tag. “... Kirsten. Did you hear everything I said?”

I nodded robotically even when we both knew it was a blatant lie. He chuckled slightly and leaned forward on my desk.

That noise…was it from my heart or from a bass drum somewhere?

“I'd like to get a response, please.”

“Just a moment,” I responded breathlessly. My fingers typing away at nothing on my laptop as I leaned towards Sharon, my desk partner. “Could you be so kind as to repeat what this man wanted?”

She shook her head and laughed quietly. “He said his debit card is expired.”

“Oh, I'm terribly sorry about your card!” I exclaimed enthusiastically. He nodded in agreement. “Why don't we get you another one?”

I pulled a form from the pile on my desk. “If you fill this for me we can get you another one in thirty minutes.”

“Thirty minutes?” He frowned and glanced at his watch. “I'm not sure I can wait that long, Miss Kirsten. Could you be a darling and have it delivered to my house later this evening?”

Sharon and I exchanged glances. “To your house? I'm sorry sir, our bank doesn't support such relations between….”

“Easy now Miss. I'm asking for a harmless favour. Please?”

At that point I knew I wouldn't say no. I just couldn't. I took his complimentary card and he walked away, charming me just as he did when he walked in.

“You're not seriously considering going to his house, are you?” Sharon whispered when he left. I shrugged.

I was sure I was going but she didn't need to know.

That evening, all my outfits suddenly didn't match up to standard in my eyes. I wanted to impress this mystery man so much that I went to shop for a new dress.

When it was 7pm like we agreed, I grabbed the card, called a ride, and headed out to fifth avenue.

The picture of his luxury apartment flashed before my eyes and a sigh of satisfaction escaped my lips. Finally, a knight in shining armor had come to save me.

When the taxi stopped, I looked around and a small frown tipped my lips.

“This isn't the location.”

The driver looked at the address on the map and turned back to me. “Ma'am, this is fifth avenue. Please make your payment and alight.”

My jaw dropped with shock. This couldn't be the neighborhood of a man who owned a pair of Bulgari. His shades alone were equivalent to how much I earned in a month.

Then an idea came to me. Maybe he was meeting up with someone here. Or perhaps he didn't want me to know his actual address.

Handing over my payment to the driver, I dropped from the cab and called the number on the card.

A man in a pair of shredded denim had a phone to his ear while I was on a call with my mystery man.

“I'm right in front of you already. Thank you.”

I blinked in confusion. The features were the same with the man I saw in the bank today.

Same green eyes, bulky frame and chestnut hair. “Nice outfit. The color suits you perfectly.” He had the same accent.

My frame wobbled and my knees almost gave way under me.

“This is impossible. Are you a twin?”

He frowned a little. “A twin? That's ridiculous. I'm the only child of my late parents. Can I have my card, please?”

I shook my head. “Hold on. What are you doing in this kind of neighborhood if you're truly the man I met today?”

He looked around him, his frown deepening. “I live and work here. I'm a drycleaner by the way. My name's Frank.”

That explained the torn trousers and the fact that he was bare chested. My mouth opened and closed again in utmost shock.

“So could you afford a pair of Bulgari if you live here?”

He shrugged. “You know what they say, the clothes make the man. I have a couple of nice outfits from the donations made to the poor last Christmas. I try my best to keep them as good as new in case I need to get somewhere that demands me looking great.”

“And why did you need me to deliver the card to your house?”

He shrugged again. “I didn't need you to do it in person. I only wanted you to help me because I can't leave work for long. My employer doesn't tolerate it.”

I couldn't believe I spent a hundred bucks on a dress because of this guy.

I handed his card over and walked away feeling like the most stupid girl on the planet.

I wouldn’t even think before considering it. Lmao.

But, I would be disappointed too. I mean after such high expectations I’m meeting with a cleaner? Come on! I would feel betrayed by everything including the universe 😂

Your writing is impeccable. Love it!

Some risk are worth taking, especially risk like this one, so I would say spending such amount on dress to go see him was totally worth it.

Thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah? This particular risk taught me an all time lesson. I will no longer judge a book by it cover.
