Battle Mage Secrets: May The Odds Be In Your Favor
Introduction
I'm here to share my Battle Mage Secrets blog post for the Battle Mage Secrets Challenge. The theme featured this week is Odd Ones Out. In this ruleset, only odd units can be used. This does make games interesting as it really limits the options that are playable. I will be sharing a battle and some strategy for this ruleset.
My Strategy & Tips For Odd Ones Out
In this ruleset, I like to look at the water, life and earth element. In water, you can play the resurrect strategy with Legionnaire Alvar and River Hellondale with some damage and support cards. Support cards would be healing and armor repair. This strategy is strong because ideally you want to revive the Legionnaire Alvar with the armor since it has void armor which would be able to tank a lot of damage. In life, I would look at Uriel the Purifier, Djinn Renova, Adelade Brightwing as the core cards and follow that up with some sneak or support. For earth element, I would look into Pelacor Mercenary, Regal Peryton and Mycelic Slipspawn with some sneak/opportunity possibly. As for the summoners, I don't really think there's any particular one that has a great advantage in this ruleset. The units are more key in my opinion.
The Battle
I played this battle on my account, shawnnft. The battle link can be found here. The ruleset for this battle was Counterspell, Odd Ones Out and Explosive Weaponry. It was a 99 mana cap with death and fire element banned.
Discussing My Lineup
Summoner, Kelya - I chose Kelya because I would have access to use the water element strategy which I mentioned earlier.
First Position, Legionnaire Alvar - I chose Legionnaire Alvar to be my main tank. This is a pretty solid tank in odds ones out a long with River Hellondale to revive it.
Second Position, Tide Bider - I chose Tide Bider for the reflection shield. This would help stop the blast damage if opponent was aiming at my first or third position unit.
Third Position, Venari Wavesmith - The main purpose of Venari Wavesmith was to create that additional armor. I though it would help kill any big armor front lines since opponent might not expect magic to be played with counterspell.
Fourth Position, River Hellondale - The purpose of River Hellondale was to revive my Legionnaire Alvar to tank more.
Fifth Position, Kulu Mastermind - The purpose of this card was to be my big DPS with opportunity. It could help kill low health targets and do blast damage in the backline.
Last Position, Swamp Spitter - Swamp Spitter was mainly for some ranged DPS while also giving support with the armor repair.
Analysis of The Battle
I faced a crushing defeat this battle because my team could not answer the Agor Longtail. The Agor Longtail was super tanky with the heal and support from Adelade Brightwing. I wasn't able to do any damage to the backline like I planned with the Kulu Mastermind. The blast damage didn't even matter either since he had Uriel the Purifier in the second position that can heal itself. I think I did well with the cards I have and there probably wasn't anything that I could've done with what I had. I maybe could've played but I don't think I could've beat the Agor Longtail.
Do I Like Odd Ones ruleset
I'm ok with this ruleset. I believe it allows certain cards and strategies to shine. I'm always almost in favor for rulesets that help create new strategies and this ruleset can create many different strategies. It also prevents some strong spammy cards from being played like Dr Blight since this is an even mana unit.
