How “The 5AM Club” Helped Me Find My Rhythm In Abuja’s Busy Life
Today, I really want to talk about a book that, honestly, made a big difference in my daily life, The 5AM Club by Robin Sharma.
As someone working in a professional office setting here in Abuja, things can get hectic. Abuja life itself is busy and sharp. If you are not intentional, it can just sweep you away. I used to find myself rushing every morning, from wardrobe confusion to traffic stress, and by the time I even sit at my desk, my whole mood would already be off. It was like my day started on the wrong foot before it even began.
One afternoon, a colleague (who is always so composed and graceful) mentioned that she follows the “5AM Club” lifestyle. I was curious immediately because I always wondered how she stayed so calm even when we’re drowning in office deadlines. She told me that waking up at 5AM every day gave her time to mentally prepare for the day, and honestly, I thought that sounded like magic.
So, I picked up the book, The 5AM Club, and started reading.
The book breaks down the idea of waking up at 5AM and spending that first hour focusing on personal growth. It suggests using 20 minutes to move your body, 20 minutes for reflection (journaling or meditation), and 20 minutes to learn something new or read.
At first, I won’t lie, I thought it was unrealistic for someone like me. Abuja nights can be long, sometimes I get home tired from work or events, and waking up at 5AM sounded more like a punishment than a productivity booster. But I decided to try it for one week, no pressure. If I didn’t like it, I’d just stop.
The first day was tough, sha. Waking up when the sky was still dark felt so unnatural. My body just didn’t want to cooperate. But as I moved my body gently, journaled my thoughts, and read a few pages of something inspiring before the sun even showed up, I felt a weird kind of peace. Something about the quiet of the early morning just hit differently.
The real magic started after a few days. I stopped rushing in the mornings. My dressing became smoother because I had time to plan properly. I wasn’t scrambling through my closet or worrying about what to wear at the last minute. My mood at work improved majorly. I went into meetings feeling calm, confident, and actually prepared rather than frazzled. Even my skin started glowing! No joke, I wasn’t as stressed, and it showed.
One thing about Abuja people is they notice the smallest things. I had people asking me if I was using a new skincare product or if I had changed my diet. But honestly, it wasn’t about products, it was just the peace showing up on my face.
The elegance and poise I always wanted to carry into the office started feeling natural. I was no longer struggling with mornings, I was owning them. I felt more in control, more aligned, and honestly, it felt amazing.
If you are working 9-5, especially in a place as fast-paced as Abuja, and you want to live intentionally without losing your mind, The 5AM Club could be a game-changer. It’s not just about waking up early. It’s about carving out time for yourself before the chaos of the day begins. It’s about claiming your time, your peace, and ultimately your life.
Thanks for reading my experience! I’d love to hear from anyone else who’s tried waking up at 5AM. How did it go for you? Let’s talk in the comments.
