Melancholy: A Journey in Courage
Rainclouds gather as the empty chair seeks it’s image in a fractured mirror, a melancholy soul trying to find itself among its fractured pieces. — ShadowsPub
The word ‘melancholy’ comes to us from the Greek “melan chole,” meaning “black bile”, one of the four humours in ancient medicine. Melancholy is often associated with the creativity of poets and artists which likely helps to explain why its often used as a catalyst for character development in literature.
Melancholy shouldn’t be confused with depression which is a more persistent form of suffering usually requiring medical intervention either through medication, counseling or both. Melancholy on the other hand is usually more transient in nature. It can last a few hours or even days. Trying to ignore melancholy away can lead to depression taking hold.
Melancholy’s presence is like a finger pointing to something in the soul seeking to be made whole. Deep within the often busy self-talk going on in our minds and heart, the subconscious is constantly at work without our knowledge. Melancholy becomes the nudge to look within, to examine our complex self, our multitude of feelings and to seek understanding.
Rainclouds gather moisture until they can hold no more and then they release into a rain of varying intensity. Melancholy can vary intensity and it does seek release. Meditation, prayer, time of quiet stillness to provide opportunity to feel or hear what is going on inside can bring those thoughts and feelings forward.
They are our thoughts and feelings, they are seeking to be heard and felt, to be integrated into self-awareness or released as energy no longer needed with thanks for the lesson they have provided. Self-awareness is a journey in courage, one that leads to a more mindful fully formed self.
