Book Review~Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

Would I say I was an addict to the Harry Potter story because I literally watched the movies, played the games, and read the book.

I remember picking up Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with trembling hands. Not because I was afraid of the story but because I knew it was the final chapter. I had grown up with these characters. I started reading Harry Potter when I was barely 12, and here I was, years later, holding the book that would either give me closure or shatter me.

What drew me in wasn’t just the magic or the school or the spells. It was the characters, the friendships, the hope in the face of evil. And now, in this last book, everything they’d fought for was at stake. I needed to know how it all ended. I needed to say goodbye properly.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the 7th and the last book of the magic series written by J.K. Rowling. This book unlike the other ones does not occur in Hogwarts. Now Harry, Ron and Hermione are in hiding, and their mission is to locate the remaining Horcruxes, the fragments of Voldemort's soul, scattered throughout the magical world.

The novel is presented as a sinister fairytale. They move through forests and towns and uncover the secrets of the past of Dumbledore, facing danger on all sides, and gradually coming to realize the truth behind the Deathly Hallows, three legendary objects that will, it is said, bring death itself to its knees.

This book is war. It's a sacrifice. It is the fear, bravery, love and loss. And at the end, it is about making the right choice and doing it against all odds.

At the very first page, I noticed the change of tone. There was no more warm atmosphere of Hogwarts halls and magical lessons. This book was gritty, tentative and weighty. The three no longer had the shelter of teachers and protecting walls. They were left open, exposed and with the burden of the wizarding world upon their shoulders.

It is somewhat creepy to see the characters you have loved all along growing up before your eyes not only in terms of years but also in terms of suffering, choices, and severity. I was always in a hyper state. Will they be able to survive? Would the Horcruxes be found on time? Will they betray one another?

and yet through all the straining, there were strong glimpses of light. Harry and Hermione dancing in a tent in one of the least romantic moments in the book- it was not romance, it was humanity in a frozen world. It was that scene that I cried not because it was sad but because it was so real.

What made this book so powerful was The Power of Sacrifice: The weight of sacrifice was what made this book so powerful: every victory in this book has its price. Not all of the characters you love survive. And with every loss you are reminded of what they are fighting over. I was crying and smiling simultaneously. Rowling does not present you with heroes, but rather broken individuals who decide to be courageous.

  1. The Friendship Tested: Ron departs, Harry loses trust, Hermione breaks, these are not ideal friendships. They are straightforward. The friendships that I have were brought to mind watching them disintegrate and reunite. Not that loyalty is always pretty, it is a decision to go back, to forgive, and to cling on.

  2. The Complexity of Dumbledore: The book has destroyed the perception that Dumbledore is the perfect teacher. We get to know of his early childhood errors, his lust of power and the regret that he lived with. It humanized him and turned him into a stronger man in my perception. Even smart individuals may fail. But it is what they decide to do next which makes them.

  3. The Strength of Choice: This is what this story reiterates: it is not a matter of who you are born, it is a matter of who you are. Draco can make a decision. Snape is not forced. Not even Harry, the chosen one, is really the slave of fate. It was a very deep message. We all struggle with it but we are all powerful. Even at night.

When I closed the final chapter, I didn’t feel relieved. I felt full. Full of emotion, of love, of pain, of pride.

It seemed that the Battle of Hogwarts was my own heart at the battlefield. I was reading, with tight, clenched fists, short breath, praying everyone will make it - but I knew not everyone could.

What lingered with me however was the epilogue. Years later, when we see these characters, they have families, they have peace, and scars, they survived. They grew. Isn t that the wish of us all?

This book helped me deal with the idea that loss does not mean the end of the story but it means that the story is changed. and that that love, true love, is a sort of magic more powerful than any wand.

One of the memorable moments of this story was the way Snape’s story unfolded... I never saw it coming. It made me rethink everything from the first book till now.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is not merely the finale of a magical series. It is a mirror directed against all of us. It teaches us to conquer fear, to do the right thing, and to be able to keep hope when all is broken.

I did not simply read a book. I completed a chapter in my life. And I went away stronger, braver, and thankful to learn more about the power of stories to make us.

And in case you are yet to read it, do not wait. You do not have to be a fantasy fan or a wizard by heart. All you have to do is believe that those are the most powerful spells: courage, friendship and love.

@Ruthie this result is really touching. I also grew up with them and love them.

Hey, @monicalandaeta the emotions hit different when you grow up with them.... It's just amazing how these characters became a part of our childhoods and stayed with us. Thanks for reading and dropping by my love ❤️🤗

This is one of the best books. The value that is thrown out and the moral is impeccable. What is life? What are we people? These are questions that arise as you choke on every word.

I stopped when I read this line: Love is a sort of magic more powerful than any wand. Truly, there is no greater magic than love.
