Weekend in Dordogne (En/Fr)

The Dordogne department in France is located in the Périgord region, which is much sought-after by tourists for its authenticity and gentle way of life.

The English have known this for a long time, and many have settled in this region, which they call Dordogneshire.
In some villages, such as Eymet, you can almost hear more English spoken than French, and the waiter at the restaurant where we stopped was English, born here to English parents who had settled in the region.

The region has many assets, not least of which is its gastronomy, with geese and ducks available in foies gras, magrets and confits, accompanied by local fruit and vegetables.

There are also many medieval sites to visit, such as the Castle of Beynac and Cadouin Abbey.
It's worth noting that the chateaux are furnished, which adds a plus to the visit; I've visited empty chateaux before, and the ease of immersion is enhanced.
The small towns also have a medieval feel, with half-timbered houses, churches and cobbled streets.
Sarlat and Bergerac are two great places to visit.
If you're familiar with Edmond Rostand's play Cyrano de Bergerac, there's a statue of the character in town, complete with highlighted nose!

I was talking about gastronomy, but it also goes hand in hand with the region's excellent wines.
I'm a big fan of sweet white wines, which go perfectly with foie gras, and I like Monbazillac, which is in the limelight here. You can visit the chateau, which dates back to the Renaissance, and of course do some tastings.
The restaurant was unfortunately closed.
(My preference for sweet white wines is Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh from nearby Gascony).

The photos were taken by me and my parents-in-law who accompanied us.
